The Mijas Town Hall will install roofs over the outdoor courts at the municipality’s infant and primary schools, optimising the use of the facilities outside school hours for public interest activities, whether sporting, cultural or social. This will improve the thermal conditions for everyone, both students during school hours and the general public outside them.
To this end, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), signed an agreement on Monday with the Junta de Andalucía’s Provincial Education Delegatio, headed by Miguel Briones. The document specifies a commitment to integrating municipally-owned centres (such as schools) more deeply into the social life of the municipality.
Permanent use
As this extended use is often limited throughout the year by weather conditions, the Mijas Town Hall will install roofs that will be permanently incorporated into the schools, without prejudice to their educational public service purpose. This means that their use will be permanent, both for outdoor school activities and during non-school periods (afternoons, holidays, weekends) when events are organised by the Town Hall. "We have been working on this agreement for over a year and a half, holding meetings with headteachers across Mijas and with the parents’ associations (AMPAs). We have been studying the best solution for each school to provide cover and shade, taking into account their specific needs and the technical requirements identified by the Infrastructure Department”, said the councillor for Education in Mijas, Juan José Torres Trella.
The infant and primary schools in the municipality are Tamixa, Los Campanales, El Chaparral, Las Cañadas, El Olmo, El Albero, María Zambrano, Nuestra Señora Virgen de la Peña, San Sebastián, Indira Gandhi and Jardín Botánico, alongside the Los Claveles nursery school.
The Town Hall will invest around five million euros in the project. "Now, the next step is to put the drafting of the project for these covers out to tender. After that, the construction work will go to tender", explained Torres Trella, who also pointed out that, for safety reasons, the work must be carried out when schools are closed, "either during the Christmas holidays, when some could be done, or in the summer of 2027".

Works
The planned work will generally consist of roofing the outdoor sports courts in accordance with the technical project to be drafted by the Mijas Town Hall and authorised, where applicable, by the Andalusian Regional Government, without prejudice to any technical adaptations required at each site.
Now that the agreement is in force, the next step for the Mijas Town Hall will be to put the projects for the schools out to tender. These differ from one another due to their size, location and design. This will ensure greater comfort and protection when using the outdoor courts, particularly during the hottest periods (at the start and end of the school year).
Jurisdiction
The installation of roofs on courts in municipally-owned spaces located within Mijas' primary schools falls within the jurisdiction of the Local Government Basis Act, the LAULA (Andalusian Local Autonomy Act) and the Andalusian Sports Act. These laws grant municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, such as Mijas, the authority to construct, manage and maintain sports facilities.
