Mata reiterates to the Government the “urgent need” to stabilise beaches with breakwaters

  • The mayoress laments the lack of solutions and demands explanations in a letter addressed to the Director-General for the Coast and the Sea
  • El antes y el después de la playa del Sheriff respecto a los trabajos de aporte de arena realizados.

Ana Mata requests an institutional and technical meeting as soon as possible to establish a “clear, realistic and verifiable” roadmap

The Mijas Town Hall reiterated to the Spanish Government “the urgent need” for the definitive stabilisation of the coastline and beaches using breakwaters. The council emphasises that “the lack of structural solutions directly affects the integrity and environmental quality of the beaches; the safety and functionality of certain sections; and the main economic activity: coastal tourism”.

In a letter sent by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), to the Director-General for the Coast and the Sea at the Ministry for Ecological Transition, Ana María Oñoro, a demand is made regarding the integrity of the coastline for “an immediate, clear and operational response regarding the actual situation and a certain forecast for its advancement”. In this regard, it is noted that the current problem “is neither temporary nor incidental, but structural”.

Mata recalls that the need for a stable solution “was identified some time ago and prompted the initiative by the Central Government to move forward with specific action in the areas of El Bombo and La Cala, yet there has been no significant progress nor an institutional explanation to clarify the reasons for this standstill”.

Report

The text signed by the mayoress emphasises that Mijas bears the consequences of the erosion and instability of its beaches year after year, “and is forced to act repeatedly with sand replenishment and palliative measures, which incur high economic costs and are provisional in scope. This is difficult to accept”, she continues.

In this regard, the Town Hall notes that it has invested 247,000 euros in regeneration works and sand replenishment over the last month and a half, after winter storms left the beaches unusable. However, the mayoress points out that this effort is an annual requirement precisely due to the lack of permanent stabilisation.

As such, Mata requests that Mijas Town Hall be informed in writing, in a full and detailed manner, of the exact administrative status of the stabilisation works at La Cala and El Bombo, “indicating the milestones already achieved, the pending procedures, any existing obstacles and the scheduled timetable for their development".

Meeting

To move forward in resolving this issue, the mayoress is requesting an institutional and technical meeting between the Directorate-General for the Coast and the Sea, the Coastal Authority (Demarcación de Costas) and the Mijas Town Hall, "in order to address the matter specifically, gain first-hand knowledge of the status of the file and establish a clear, realistic and verifiable roadmap”.

Solutions

“Mijas is one of the main tourist destinations in Málaga and Andalusia. Maintaining its beaches in proper condition is not a secondary matter, but a basic requirement from an environmental, social and economic perspective. It is not reasonable that a municipality of the importance of Mijas should continue to face this problem periodically with emergency solutions, while the definitive response fails to materialise”, the letter concludes.
