The Parks and Gardens Department of Mijas Town Hall has quadrupled the rate of tree planting within the municipality compared to last year, already exceeding 540 units since the beginning of January. When these are added to the plantings carried out in 2025, the total exceeds 1,100 across the entire municipal area.
The initiative, launched by this department, aims to increase the tree cover and green spaces in the municipality. The objective is also to replace specimens downed by the strong gusts of wind during winter storms or, more recently, those affected by the 'Fusarium' fungus, as occurred with the palm trees. This was stated on Monday by the councillor for the department, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who noted that “we want Mijas to be an even greener municipality than it already is, and we haven't stopped in our efforts, as we have carried out numerous actions to make it look even more beautiful”. “And not just for aesthetic”, added the councillor, “but also so that our avenues, streets and parks have the natural shade that trees provide, while also improving the oxygen we breathe”.

In this regard, to the number of trees felled by storms, one must add those that the Parks and Gardens staff, Operational Services, and Mijas firefighters were forced to remove to prevent the risk of them falling onto public and residential areas.
Types of trees
Among the species planted, which were cultivated in the municipal nursery, notable examples include carob, wild olive, cork oak, lemon, plane, pine, palm, holm oak, medlar, dwarf fan palm, orange, ficus, nettle trees, fig, oleander and cypress. “Every time one of these specimens is planted, it is done so sustainably; a drip irrigation system is installed to optimise water consumption to the maximum, and we ensure the maintenance required for each species is minimal while providing significant shade in a short time”, explained Gómez Teruel.
In the three districts
According to the councillor for Parks and Gardens, the planting work is being carried out in Mijas Pueblo, La Cala and Las Lagunas. The main areas of activity include Las Cordobesas, Campo Mijas, La Buganvilla, El Chaparral, the racecourse (hipódromo), El Albero, Calahonda, Jardín Inglés, the Coastal Path (Senda Litoral), the southern bypass (vial sur), El Cañón, La Alquería, Valtocado, El Coto and Los Arenales.
