The Rotary Club Mijas International’s post-Christmas charity event was a huge success. More than 60 people, including members and non-members, attended the event, which raised funds for AFA Mijas. The Mijas-based group, which provides services to Alzheimer’s patients and their families, expressed their “eternal gratitude” for the club’s latest gesture. “At AFA Mijas, we are very grateful to the Rotary Club because this is not the only event it has organised for us. Recently, we also received another donation: they have installed a new door control system at the centre. They are always there for everything we need,” explained the director and psychologist of the AFA Mijas Day Centre, Mari Carmen López.
The party took place on Friday 23rd at La Sierra restaurant, where guests enjoyed dinner, music and a raffle to raise even more funds. “We felt that we really had to help them move to their new building”, explained the president of the Rotary Club Mijas, Andy Whiton, who added that thanks also to La Sierra, they expected “to raise around a thousand euros”, in addition to “what is raised from the raffle”, bringing the total to “around €1,500”, Whiton estimated.

AFA Mijas will allocate all of the funds to get the new building, provided by the Town Hall, up and running as soon as possible. The space will be used to expand their day centre, which currently cares for 25 people. “We have been supporting them for a few years now and they have a particularly important project at the moment to support more patients and their families. They have a building next door with which they can expand their services, but the building is unfinished, there is no electricity or water inside; basically there are the walls, the windows and the roof, and that costs a lot of money”, stressed the former president and treasurer of the Rotary Club Mijas International, Katja Range.
The leader of the club’s Local Service Committee also pointed out that the club’s next event will be a twinning with another Rotarian from England, who will be spending a few days in Mijas.
