Forty-six years ago Spain was a very different country. After difficult times for everyone, on December 6th, 1978, the referendum was held to ratify the Spanish Constitution, which was achieved with the vote in favour of almost 88% of the voters. A date that we cannot forget and that Mijas celebrated with an institutional act.

Giving the prominence it deserves to the text that governs the rights and obligations of Spanish citizens, brought together members of the municipal corporation, security forces, groups and individuals in an event that took place in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. To celebrate the 46th anniversary of the Magna Carta, the Mijas Town Hall gave the spotlight to the youngest, who were in charge of reading articles 1, 2, 14 and 56 of the Spanish Constitution. 

The Mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), gave the readers a copy of the Spanish Constitution as a sign of gratitude for their participation in this event. The mayoress also addressed those present, highlighting the importance of the Magna Carta: "We have to be aware that the Spanish Constitution is the law of laws, the one that establishes our fundamental principles and for which many people worked hard". After her speech,  the traditional hoisting of the Spanish flag took place, accompanied by the national anthem played by the Mijas Band. 

During the event, the government team highlighted the importance of the text signed on 6 December 1978. The opposition groups also defended the Constitution as a guarantee of equality and coexistence. 

The event concluded with a breakfast with chocolate and fritters and a concert by the Mijas Music Band.
