AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa has also developed an extensive programme of activities on the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day. Charity events, tables, reading of a manifesto and the memory tent, are some of the most important initiatives with which this group reminds us that this disease is the leading cause of dementia in Spain, accounting for 70% of cases.
A decrease in attention span, memory and speech abilities can be a sign of a dementia-related problem. For this reason, on Friday, in addition to the information tables set up by AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa, the neuropsychologist of the association, Carlota Wiehoff, carried out tests on the neighbours who stopped by the tables,"the tests are mainly used to evaluate memory, but also attention and language, because it is especially in speech that the first symptoms start to appear", explained the neuropsychologist.
As part of the programme of activities, on Friday a manifesto was also read at the Costa del Sol Health District, where they recalled this year's slogan, ‘We are specific’ and made an appeal to the health community, so that as the vice-president of AFA Fuengirola - Mijas Costa explained, "when patients visit the doctors, they are informed of the existence of non-pharmacological treatments that are carried out in centres such as AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa, where we offer a wide variety of therapies"
On Saturday, during the show ‘Nostálgicas habaneras’, the association presented the ‘ Antonio Lebrón Carer of the Year’ award to Ana María Rámirez, a neighbour from Mijas.
