This year the slogan of the confederation of associations on the occasion of the World Alzheimer's Day is ‘We are specific'

During the weekend AFA Mijas held its programme of activities on the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day. After their open day on Thursday, on Friday and Saturday they went out on the streets with information tables.

On Friday AFA Mijas set up information tables in Mijas Pueblo and Las Lagunas and on Saturday in Mijas Pueblo and La Cala. In the Plaza de San Valentín in front of the Health Centre they held their charity collection in celebration of World Alzheimer's Day.

The director of the AFA Mijas Day Centre, Mari Carmen López, explained that Alzheimer's "is specific and cannot be included in the same category as all neurodegenerative diseases because although they share biological symptoms, the care of the patient and the carer are different", and added that "it is very important that patients are well advised by the health system, so that they are referred to specific centres to receive cognitive stimulation treatment complementary to pharmacological treatment in order to slow down the decline and the evolution of the disease as much as possible".

The association also requests that Alzheimer's patients are taken into account in the Dependency Law, as they suffer a very rapid cognitive deterioration. At the tables there was a psychologist who carried out tests to identify and detect the first symptoms of the disease.

The psychologist from AFA Mijas, Carmen García, explained that she was carrying out screening tests "to find out the condition of the memory in different cognitive areas and that in the case of finding any faults, the patient would received advice and information about the association and the different workshops and activities we offer".

In addition to these tables, on Saturday there was a play in aid of the association, in the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas with Miguel Caiceo and Manolo Medina.

The Town Hall unconditionally supports the work of these associations throughout the year, "these events are very important to inform the population about this subject and to provide them with information", said the councillor for Social Inclusion, Melisa Ceballos (PP).
