Yesterday morning, a group of 55 elderly people from our municipality went to Estepona to visit The Orchidarium, one of the trips included in the programme 'Get to know your province'. The residents taking part in this activity are students of the Active Ageing programme organised by the Senior Citizens Department.
The Orchidarium in Estepona is home to more than 3,000 species selected for their beauty and originality.
One of the psychologists who teaches the programme, Carlos Beunza, explained that with this type of activities "they benefit from the social aspect, the trip and breaking from their routine, in short, it has many benefits for their mental health".
The people who attend the Active Ageing programme take part in psychotherapy, laughter therapy and art therapy workshops, as well as cognitive stimulation. In addition, Beunza added that in the workshops "they work a lot on their memory, so that little by little they can recover what they may have lost".
The 'Get to know your province' programme offers them the opportunity to break away from their daily routine and spend a very special day. Beunza pointed out that throughout the year "we organise special activities, so that they can see different things, and have a good time".
The workshops are held in Las Cañadas, Las Lagunas, Mijas Pueblo and La Cala. Those interested in participating can contact the Senior Citizen Department. Yesterday's activity marks the end of the course, which will be resumed in September.
