Get ready to be a youth volunteer at AFA Mijas

The Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's patients and other dementias of Mijas organises a training workshop on Friday 28th of June

The holidays are coming and the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's patients and other dementias of Mijas (AFA Mijas) proposes a plan to young people: to become volunteers of the association. In 2004, that is, 20 years ago, the youth volunteer programme of the Mijas Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's and other dementias patients was launched. An initiative which, according to the association, means, on the one hand, a greater motivation for the elderly and, on the other hand, the acquisition of social commitment and self-esteem for the young people.

Some 25 volunteers take part each year. For those who want to participate this year, AFA Mijas is organising a free training workshop, which will be held on Friday 28th of June at 10:00 hours, in the study room of the Mijas Pueblo Library. It will be given by the psychologist and director of the centre, Mari Carmen López. "What they learn is to know what Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia are, what are the most common symptoms, what they are going to find when they start volunteering, how they have to treat the grandparents, so we will give them a guide on how to approach them", explained López.

The requirements to participate in both the workshop and the programme are very simple, "they must be young people who want to share their time with our elders, they love having young people here, they have to be between eight and 17 years old", explained the director of the AFA Mijas Day Centre. López added that "those who have already done it before, that is to say, who have already been volunteers, don't have to do it".

This year, one of the new features of the training workshop is that it can be attended both in person and online. The volunteering programme aims, above all, to instil social commitment in young people and for them to collaborate by sharing time and affection with the users of AFA Mijas, people who, according to the association, "have a lot to give and teach you".

Those interested in taking part in the workshop can contact afamijas@alzheimerdemalaga.org and call 952 590 810 and 661 867 951.
