On the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day, the Department for Health promoted a competition aimed at secondary school students in which they had to design a campaign against the consumption of vapers. The prizes were awarded on Monday 17th, at the IES Sierra de Mijas, to the almost 80 students who took part in the competition. Their campaigns are aimed at raising awareness among their peers, because an electronic cigarette can cause serious illnesses to those who vape, but what is more serious is that people start vaping at an increasingly younger age. "Currently, vapers are what children use the most, because they can easily buy and smoke them and they are not aware of how harmful they are to their health", said the councillor for education, Melisa Ceballos. She added that, "they are starting to use vapes at an increasingly younger age, at 10 or 11 years old, and it's hard to control them".
The Health Department, in collaboration with the departments for Education and Youth, launched this competition which aims to raise awareness . This initiative was also supported by the Las Lagunas Health Centre, the clinics in La Cala and Mijas Pueblo, the Spanish Association Against Cancer and the Lew Hoad Tennis Club.
The president of the association against cancer in Mijas, Lola Sanchís, explained that "the physical consequences of the continued use of vapes are still unknown and in order to raise awareness, we have given prevention courses in schools this year and we will continue next year".
79 students from six different schools took part in this competition in which they had to design a campaign against vaping. They already know that vaping is bad for their health and now they have to let their classmates know about it. Rubén and his group made their campaign on instagram.
As this student explained, their instagram account is called ''Respira sin vapers' (Breathe without vapes) and they publish posts about the consequences of vaping, using phrases to raise awareness and uploading videos showing the posters they paste around the school to raise awareness among young people.
Although other students created posters, documentaries or participated in other ways, Babil's group, the highest rated, also used Instagram to raise awareness among their classmates. As Babil explained, "the situation is alarming, as children are smoking at an increasingly younger ages. It is important that parents know what their children are doing and that is why this campaign organised by the town hall is essential".
