Although the weather threatened rain early in the morning, finally it didn't rain during Wednesday's event and Mijas celebrated again the First of May with the traditional 'Sardinada'. The event was a success, before midday the atmosphere in the Plaza del Torreón and on the promenade of La Cala was very lively.
Mijas Town Hall first celebrated the Sardinada more than 40 years ago on the occasion of Workers' Day. Every year many residents from all over the town, as well as from other parts of the region and even from abroad, join in this event. "This day, the First of May, is celebrated with this 'sardinada', to treat all those people, the tourists who come to visit us, but also those of us who are from here and want to spend this Workers' Day festivity with our family and friends", recalled the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who, along with the rest of the members of the government team, attended the celebration.
During the day, almost twenty workers from the departments of Operational Services and Festivities and Traditions were in charge of preparing and distributing the 700 kilos of sardines. "We have been doing this for almost 40 years, I have been doing it for 23 years, but my colleagues who have retired have been doing it for almost 50 years. It is typical that we do this for the tourists and for the people who come here to La Cala de Mijas, which is a very beautiful place", explained one of the municipal workers, Juan Moreno.
