The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), said during the session held last Friday that it has been a long road to get to this plenary session. According to the mayor, in 2019 the government team made a commitment to create the Public Sports Agency with the workers, "then came the pandemic and in 2021 an audit was requested to know the economic impact" that the outsourcing or municipalisation of sport would have on the Town Hall's coffers.
In August 2022, the mayor continued, a commission was set up comprising all the affected parties: "Meetings have been held with union representatives, with the companies providing the service to reach an agreement, without division on anyone's part, to reach an agreement that has been reached by consensus", said Gonzalez.
For his part, the councillor for Sports, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), pointed out that this step has been taken because it had legal coverage: "We have been working hard for a year since March 2022 because we were backed by a Supreme Court ruling, which opened the path for us by incorporating doctrine established by the European Court of Justice, and that has provided us with this legal umbrella".
Ruiz also thanked the trade unions and workers for their commitment "as, through a cordial relationship, we have been able to combine efforts, technical and legal criteria to create this public agency".
Peace of mind for the workers
The government team pointed out that returning the management of sport to the public sector "is only fair". "With this agency we not only provide security to 120 families, but it is also a matter of justice, because it is a service that has gone from being a council to becoming an external company and now, again, they will be linked to the Mijas Town Hall through this public agency.
The councillor for Sports expressed the same opinion, as he believes that "it is important to have already approved the Public Agency to give peace of mind to both the monitors and the users that sport is going to be managed directly by the Town Hall through this entity".
Starting up the Agency
The government team pointed out that this is the first step, but now it is necessary to provide the Public Sports Agency with a budget: "The objective is obviously that this Public Agency is not only created today, but that in the coming months we will provide it with a budget and establish a serious and responsible structure", said Gonzalez, who added that "With this agency we are going to take the leap in quality that the municipality needs".
"The Town Hall, through this public agency, will directly and immediately take charge of the public management of sport, I think this is an important milestone", said Ruiz.
Esperanza Jiménez, the non-attached councillor, questioned the setting up of the agency: "It will be doubtful whether the Public Sports Agency can finally be set up" and added that "if the economic and financial plan worked in this Town Hall, sport would once again be managed by the Local Council".
Neither the PP nor the non-attached councillors, Juan Carlos Maldonado and Carlos Rivero, intervened in the debate on this motion. The proposal went ahead with the votes in favour of the entire corporation, a decision that was applauded by the workers who attended the plenary session.
