Environment presents the prizes for the Arbor Day Contest

  • José Antonio Lavado; Fernando Torres; Emilio Gómez, the councillor for the Environment, Arancha López; and the area’s technician Juan Luis Vega

The winners were Emilio Gómez, José Antonio Lavado and Fernando Torres, with the first, second & third prizes respectively

The Mijas Town Hall’s Department for the Environment presented the prizes for the World Tree Day competition on Tuesday 11th, which this year celebrated its third edition with the entry of almost one hundred photographs, all of them dedicated to unique trees in the municipality.

As for the contest, the councillor responsible for this department, Arancha López (Cs), stressed that, “little by little, it is becoming more important in the municipality”, while assuring that “it has been difficult to select the best photographs”.

The presentation of these prizes took place next to the tree photographed by the winner of the competition, Emilio Gómez, who chose a carob tree located in the rural setting of El Hornillo to take part in the contest. “The truth is that I had seen several trees previously, but I really loved this one because of its bark and the age-old trunk”, explained the author of the photograph, adding that “it is an infrared photograph, in black and white, and I am very pleased that it has been selected, it is a real honour”.

José Antonio Lavado won second prize for his photograph entitled ‘Holm oak at sunset’, “a tree that was not often photographed in the second edition”, he said, adding that “to capture the ideal image I went to the spot at different times of the day, playing with the sun, until I captured the best moment”.

Fernando Torres received third prize with his ‘Meditation oak’, also located in the El Hornillo area. “It is a tree that you fall in love with just by seeing it on that small hill, with its arms open, you stand beneath it and it invites you to admire the landscape and enjoy its sunsets”, said the prize winner, also encouraging the public “to come and see all these trees that we have in Mijas”.

In this regard, the councillor for the Environment recalled the purpose of this competition, which is none other than “to continue to promote the environmental heritage of our municipality and the eight routes that we have marked to visit each of the trees listed in Mijas for their singularity”.

López also expressed her appreciation to Milagros Román, whose photograph ‘El paso del tiempo’ (The passage of time) was the most voted on social networks, thus winning the prize awarded by the popular jury.

Finally, the councillor thanked the East-West company for their collaboration as sponsors of the competition, who awarded the winners with cheques for 200, 100 and 50 euros, respectively, plus another 50 euros for the most voted photo on social networks.
