The Junta suspends agricultural burning and lighting fires in recreational areas

  • The regional ruling will be in force until October 15th

The Andalusian government exceptionally instates this measure due to the drought

On Tuesday 11th, the Andalusian Regional Government (Junta de Andalucia) raised the alert level for the risk of forest fires from low to medium, a notice that this year is 20 days earlier than usual, as it was usually signed on May 1st. To avoid any risk that could trigger a fire, from now on all agricultural burning and the use of barbecues in recreational areas will be suspended.

In this regard, the councillor for the Environment at the Mijas Town Hall, Arancha López (Cs), explained that “this is a temporary order that is established exceptionally to monitor, prevent and extinguish forest fires due to the scarce rainfall that we are registering and the high temperatures that are being recorded for this time of the year”.

López insisted that this measure is very necessary, above all, due to the period of drought we are going through and to avoid fires such as those which, unfortunately, occurred last year in the Sierra de Mijas or in the area of La Majadilla, among other locations.

According to the Regional Government of Andalusia, so far this year, the Infoca service has intervened in up to 113 forest fires in the region, of which 22 have been considerable fires and 91 have been outbreaks. The Regional Government’s Order will remain in force until the 15th of October this year.
