Mijas renews its entire fleet of containers

  • At year-end, 950 new vandal-proof rubbish bins with ashtrays were distributed throughout Mijas
  • Mayor Josele González and councillor for Cleaning, Laura Moreno, presented the new containers on Thursday the 9th |

The deployment of these has begun across the more than 600 collection points distributed throughout the municipality

The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Cleaning, Laura Moreno (PSOE), announced on Thursday the 9th the complete renovation of the fleet of containers in the municipality with the installation of 2,000 new units. These containers, which have already begun to be distributed throughout the municipality, will not only improve the visual impact but also the efficiency of waste collection.  “We have already begun the implementation of 840 new containers in different parts of our municipality. We are going to renew the entire fleet of containers, both rear and side loading, including the addition of the brown container that we presented weeks ago, which would amount to about 2,000 units in total spread throughout the municipality”, said the councillor from the local government in Mijas, who recalled that “many of the containers we had until now had already exhausted their shelf life, which is why they will be replaced by units that are 20 centimetres lower but have the same capacity, meaning that  we will improve the visual impact they present without affecting the capacity of collection. In addition, as a novelty, each container includes its denomination in Braille so that people who are visually impaired can know which container they are using”.

In this way, Mijas during this term of office “has made an important leap forward in terms of cleaning, not only renewing the image of this service but also providing it with materials more in keeping with the times”, added González, ¨stating: “not in vain, these containers are made of 80% recycled material, so their carbon footprint is minimal and for us it was also very important that these containers were sustainable and kind to the environment. Now, we can only ask the public to take care of them, because it is a matter of all of us ensuring that they look as good as the first day”. Collection points The distribution of the containers has already begun and is expected to be completed by the end of March. “We are making a great effort to respond to all neighbourhood demands, including those of urbanisations.

The roll-out of these containers has already begun in Las Lagunas and, little by little, we will be deploying them throughout the rest of the town”, Moreno emphasised. At the end of the year, Mijas acquired 800 brown bins “to adapt to current European regulations on sustainable circular economy and to separate organic waste that can be converted into compost, bio-waste to be used as fertiliser or as a source of energy, from those that are not”, added the councillor. This is yet another step in the roadmap set up by the Mijas Town Hall with the new street cleaning and urban waste collection service, which in recent months has also included the renovation of 950 rubbish bins with ashtrays and anti-vandalism bins. Currently, the street cleaning and urban waste collection service in Mijas has been awarded to the company FCC Equal for a period of 10 years and a contract for the value of 87.9 million euros.
