After going through different advisory boards and provisional approvals, the Andalusian Regional Government gave the green light to the final approval of the structural urban modification of the Ensanche de La Cala sector. “This is a historic modification of the General Plan of Mijas, which is now finally approved by the Territorial Commission, under the Regional Government of Andalusia, on which we have been working since 2013, but which was given impetus in 2016, 2018 and 2021”, said the councillor for Town Planning on Wednesday the 8th, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), who stressed that “it is a modification on which much work has been done, even with the residents who live in the area around the Los Olivos park, football field and sports centre of La Cala, the Aldi supermarket, an area that has been developing in recent years”.

Three objectives This urban modification has three main objectives. The first of these is to regulate the sector after the urbanisation works that have taken place in recent years, “as there were some discrepancies that with this modification are brought into line with the resulting physical reality in which technical systems such as water deposits, telecommunications lines, electricity, supply are contemplated and all of this is regulated”. The second reason is to change the type of building to reduce the environmental impact. “The old plan included isolated dwellings, where walls of up to 15 metres were allowed, which we understood should not be allowed in the 21st century, and this modification corrects the environmental imbalance that could have occurred”, explains Ruiz, who assures that “the constructions that are carried out will be more sustainable, they will share services and consumption will be lower”.

The third is to improve traffic in the area through the construction of three roundabouts to facilitate accessibility, as the Town Planning councillor stated: “After carrying out a study of traffic, three roundabouts have been planned: one at the La Cala sports centre, another at the health centre, and the third, behind the supermarket, which will allow more accessibility to traffic”. This modification affects an area of 723,502 square metres, which includes more than 270,000 square metres of green zones, including the Roza del Aguado cork grove, 36,000 square metres of educational facilities, 17,800 square metres of sports facilities and almost 67,000 square metres of social facilities.
