The first deputy mayor and councillor for Infrastructures and Works, José Carlos Martín (Cs), toured the municipality on the morning of Tuesday 7th to check the state of the new hydraulic works planned to combat flooding in Mijas over the last eight years, which have involved an investment of 28.5 million euros. “At times like these, when it rains with such intensity, it is when we realise how important these infrastructures are, such as collectors, rainwater frames or the separate networks for rainwater and sewage”. In this way, “although in the not so distant past the residents of the most affected areas had their homes flooded and even lost vehicles due to the rain, now they can rest assured that the evacuation capacity is much greater and prevents this type of problem”, Martín pointed out. Of these 28.5 million, 10.6 million have already been executed and, on the other hand, 17.9 million are divided between the works that are being executed and those that are being contracted. Therefore, in La Cala de Mijas the integral remodelling works (with their respective separate networks) on Antequera, Butiplaya, Marbella, Estepona and Paseo de Andalucía streets have made it through the storm without any serious incidents.
“In the area of Los Cordobeses we have also acted firmly and with priority because the situation that the neighbours were experiencing was untenable every time it rained with regard to flooding. Now, we hope that the Costas project will go ahead to also provide a solution to the coastline that invades this area with the rains and prevent the sea from ‘eating’ the houses during the storms”, said the councillor. Martín also visited Las Lagunas, where the hydraulic works, according to the government team, have rendered an “exemplary performance”. “We all still remember the water park and the McDonald’s roundabout every time it rained and the cars were covered with water. Both the stormwater framework in the Islas Marianas area and the collector in the same area of influence have made it possible to leave in the past these dramatic moments that these neighbours have been living through for decades”, he added.
The same is true of the El Juncal neighbourhood, as the collectors in the Río Darro or Virgen de la Paz streets “have improved the quality of life of the residents, just as in the area of the Las Lagunas Health Centre the flooding has also ended thanks to the two phases of the collector in Calle San Valentín and the comprehensive remodelling of Calle de la Unión, Ébano or Roble, among others”, the executive explained in a statement. Finally, councillor Martín highlighted the work being carried out on the widening of the Camino de Campanales, as the new channelling will prevent flooding, especially in the area of Venta de la Morena.
Future actions already envisaged
The councillor for Infrastructures and Works of the Mijas Town Hall, José Carlos Martín (Cs), recalls that “the most delicate black spots regarding flooding in the town have already been eradicated”, thanks to these works which have in many cases separated the rainwater and sewage channelling, while at the same time the roads and streets have also been completely remodelled on the surface. “But there is still important work to be done”, as the councillor affirms, which is why “we have already planned some very important actions such as the sewage collectors on the West Cornice and East Cornice of Mijas Pueblo, the one on Avenida Carmen Sáenz de Tejada or the one in La Alquería”.
