Mijas will receive Government Aid for the recovery of the areas affected by the fires

  • The flames burned thousands of hectares of the Sierra de Mijas.

The affected areas by the fires on the 15th and 26th of July have been declared areas of catastrophic damage

The areas affected by the fires in the Sierra de Mijas have been declared catastrophic zones and will receive aid for their recovery. It was announced on Tuesday, 23rd August, by the Government spokesperson and Minister for Territorial Policy, Isabel Rodríguez, after the Council of Ministers.

Specifically, two fires have been considered seriously affected by civil protection emergencies (ZAEPC), the one that occurred on 15th July and the one on 26th July. Both reached level 1 according to the General State Emergency Plan.

The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González, indicated "from Mijas Town Hall, we welcome this type of initiative and the sensitivity the Spanish Government is showing towards the affected areas". "We will continue collaborating with  administrations, and a Reforestation and Conservation Plan for the Sierra Mijas-Alpujata will be implemented as soon as possible.  It is essential for the declaration as a Natural Park so that the resources destined for the prevention and enhancement of the Sierra Mijas' natural wealth are increased throughout the year", he explained.

Although there has not yet been a detailed assessment of the damage or the amount of damage, the consequences of the fires and the measures carried out to extinguish them justify the intervention of the General State Administration.

In the case of Mijas, due to its size, both disasters required the participation of more than 400 professionals belonging to 112, Civil Protection, Civil Guard, Police Unit attached to the Junta and Local Police, and the preventive evacuation of thousands of people. Some 2,000 hectares were burned in the municipalities of Mijas, Alhaurín el Grande and Alhaurín de la Torre.

In Spain, since 12th June, 119 forest fires have been recorded besides great material and environmental damage, have caused the death of three people and the evacuation of more than 27,500 people.
