La Cala Fair brings together more than 30,000 people for five days of entertainment

  • For five days, the fishing village welcomed a wide range of music for all tastes.

A batucada rhythm lit up the festivities, which have included more traditional activities

The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González, and the Councillor for Fiestas, Tamara Vera, made a positive assessment of La Cala Fair, which last Sunday put the finishing touch to five days of an intense programme of leisure and music enjoyed by more than 30,000 people.

"After two years of the pandemic, we were looking forward to meeting again in these festivities that have shown, once again, that they are a benchmark in the leisure and music programme of the Costa del Sol in the summer period. The thousands of people who gathered in our fairgrounds and the Torreón day fair are proof of the good health of these festivities in La Cala," said the Mijas Councillor. He stressed, "it is a coexistence fair of many nationalities. Many visitors from different parts of the world join this festival, making every year we continue to grow in public affluence. These have been intense days for the Festivities Department, municipal workers, police, firemen, cleaning, civil protection and basic income. There is no greater reward than to see people enjoying themselves and being happy at the fair".

Thus, for five days, the seaside town has hosted a wide range of music for all tastes, with stellar performances by Mago de Oz, Delaossa, La Guardia, 'No me pises que llevo chanclas', Longplay, La Húngara and Kiko Veneno. These free concerts have sold out the Municipal Stand. "We are once again committed to top-level performances but with a styles' variety so that all audiences feel represented. These days we have witnessed how every night our Municipal Stand has been filled with different profiles' people and everyone has enjoyed our programme", added Vera. She reminded us that live music has not only been present in the Municipal Stand, "we have also had great groups in our daytime fair in the Torreón with Rompeolas, Mr Proper, Kalima, Encarni Navarro, and Destrangis".

After two years of the pandemic, the streets of La Cala once more witnessed the parade of Giants and Big Heads, where numerous children put on their big heads to parade to the batucada rhythm. It provided the musical touch to the lighting ceremony last Wednesday, thus inaugurating five days of an intense programme of leisure and music in the centre of La Cala.

A centre where music and tradition have gone hand in hand with activities such as the elderly people's dinner, which brought together some 200 pensioners and retired people from La Cala in the Municipal Stand, the election of the King and Queen and their children's counterparts, in which some 70 children took part. The little ones were also protagonists of the Children's Day, "in which from 7 pm to 9 pm the attractions have been music-free so that children have been able to enjoy our fair eliminating acoustic barriers", emphasises Vera.

Concerning the locations, La Cala has had two epicentres: the fairgrounds and the Plaza del Torreón, decorated for the occasion with colour lights. A unique daytime fair by the sea where the family atmosphere has been the predominant note and where you could taste free paella, distribution of fans, live music, and the election of the "marchoso" and "marchosa" (swinging) of the fair last Sunday.

With the end of these festivities, the Mijas locality is setting the wheels in motion for its next fair, Mijas Pueblo, which will take place from the 7th to the 11th of September. "Mijas has an added complexity because it has three fairs, one for each town. Each one has its singularity, that is why we work hard so that each one has its special touch", they conclude.
