Mijas adds two new shaded areas in the Virgen de la Peña Square

  • With these new structures, the town has eight new artificial shade areas in parks and streets of the municipality, which will increase next year
  • The Mayor and the Councillor for Public Roads supervise the installation of the awning for the play areas in the Virgen de la Peña Square.

Awnings have been installed in the play area and at the horse-drawn carriage stop, providing 210 square metres of shade

The Department of Public Roads, in collaboration with the Department of Parks and Gardens, has installed two new shade elements in Mijas Pueblo, this time in the children's playground and the horse-drawn carriage stop in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. "Since I became Mayor, we have gone from not having any type of shaded area in any public space in the municipality, in any park in the municipality, to having up to eight different areas in different parks and emblematic streets of our municipality," said the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the Councillor for Public Roads, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE). They supervised, this morning, the installation of these latest generation micro-perforated and wind resistant canvases as they anchor to special supports.

The Councillor for Public Roads explained that these new elements "represent 210 square metres which are in addition to the approximately one thousand square metres installed last year". In this sense, he recalled that also awnings were located in the park of Butibamba and El Limonar, both in La Cala, while in Las Lagunas, they were installed in the Water Park and the Dog Park in Sector 31, plus the Hippodrome Park and Malaga Street. Cruz added this shade project is continuing and will be completed next year "with the development of shades and the installation of awnings in all the municipal playgrounds", plus "in half a dozen streets and roads of high tourist and commercial interest both in La Cala de Mijas and in Mijas Pueblo".

According to the Mayor, the awnings installed in the Virgen de la Peña square replace several trees that have been removed due to illness while the new ones grow. "In this case, they are replacing several trees that suffered from disease, and we had to remove them because they were dead. We have replaced them with two new trees and while they grow, we have provided a solution", explained the Mayor. He also stated that they are studying the possibility of installing awnings in schools, as some schools have requested for.
