The Mijas street cleaning and RSU service is awarded for the next 10 years

  • The contract, currently in the public exhibition period, will be signed in the next few weeks
  • The Mayor of the town, Josele González (PSOE), along with the Councillor for the area, Laura Moreno (PSOE)

It includes salary and labour staff improvements, machinery renovation, and the extension of the services provided

Mijas will have a new street cleaning and urban waste collection service (RSU) for the municipality. The Mayor of the town, Josele González (PSOE), along with the Councillor for the area, Laura Moreno (PSOE), announced, after the tender was awarded for this service  provision last week. "It will allow adapting the cleaning work in the town according to the needs of a city like Mijas, in constant growth," said the representatives.

Some of the novelties included in this new contract are the machinery improvements, an increase in the number of waste collection areas and the renovation and extension of the number of containers. "We are dealing with a necessary contract to cover the city's needs. It will allow us to increase the cleanliness of the town to another level of excellence, as we will have the most advanced machinery and also a greater staff number," said the Councillor. He also stressed that "this service will be implemented with brand new facilities such as the two new logistics centres recently built by the local authority for waste management and street cleaning. These two warehouses' strategic location and 2,373 and 2,567 metres will allow a much more efficient service as the workers will not have to travel to Malaga, as is currently the case".

Thus, pending the end of the 15-day exhibition period established by the Public Procurement Act after the award, the Council will sign the contract with the company resulting from the tender, FCC Equal. This service will be set up for the next ten years, for 87.9 million euros divided into annual instalments.

Working conditions

The contract will include improvements in wages and street cleaners working conditions, and RSU service workers. "This contract will include the staff's claims they have been asking for, improving their working conditions, and increasing their salaries," said Moreno. He explained that "it will also include an increase in the workforce to carry out a service that seeks excellence, adapted to current and future singularities of our city, and that will allow us to attend to any part of the municipality. We will reach places where it has been difficult to reach due to the limited resources that we currently have".

Likewise, the conditions included in the tender call include the 85% increase in hiring of people with labour market access difficulties in the event of new hires, sick leave or replacements, and the commitment to employ 66% of women in these cases.

In this way, the local government will make what will be the "most ambitious and complete cleaning service contract developed to date in the town". "For our part, we are putting the best available resources on the streets so that our streets look better than ever, so we also ask for the citizens' collaboration to achieve excellence between us all".

For all these reasons, the Council informs that this new service will include side loading machinery, an increase in litter bins. These street cleaning services will be a reality in the coming weeks. "It will place the town as one of the leading cities in street cleaning and waste collection".
