Intending to seek new funding alternatives, Cudeca launched the Solidarity Schools campaign in 2021. This initiative looks for new funding ways to carry out the Palliative Care Paediatric Unit construction to help children and adolescents. "They have different needs to those of adults and, therefore, we want to improve their care," says the Cudeca Foundation, adding that "last year, this initiative raised almost 15,000 euros".
The Mijas Town Hall Education and Volunteering Councillor, Mariló Olmedo (Cs), has not hesitated to support this Cudeca initiative. She wants to involve students and high school students in the municipality. "We invite the educational community to organise a solidarity event such as a race. It is usually relatively easy to organise in a school or high school. Each participant could donate one, two or three euros, or whatever is agreed in the centre", explains Esthér Ráez, Head of the Communication and Event Department of the Cudeca Foundation.
Olmedo participated in the promotional video recording that will reach the Mijas schools. It will also be through social networks and WhatsApp: "We have to collaborate with Cudeca as they are always helping patients and families in need. For this reason, we have to be with the Foundation".
Care unit
The funds raised will go to the Paediatric Palliative Care Unit construction. "We need to care for these children and adolescents with a paediatrician specialising in palliative care, supported by the rest of our interdisciplinary team. We will have a small house that will serve as a home to accommodate a child and the whole family when necessary, including their pet. This way, we can look after them 24 hours a day and offer them our special way of caring," Cudeca explains.
Last year, the campaign was already very well received in the province, Ráez indicated: "Approximately, in the province, between all the races that were organised, and other similar events in many different schools, we managed to raise around 20,000 euros, and that is very good because they are students who are doing what they can to help a good cause".
Information work
In addition to the promotional video, informative talks will also be held to raise awareness of Cudeca's work at schools. "We are going to try to give as much support as possible to this campaign and get a good collection from the Mijas schools so that they can open this care unit soon," said Olmedo.

Both the City Council and the Foundation encourage students to collaborate with this initiative. "They can propose any fundraising challenge in their class, with the football team, or in one of the groups in which they participate and help Cudeca in this way," said the Education and Volunteering Councillor.
In this sense, Ráez said that "wherever they want, they can set themselves a fundraising challenge and whatever they raise will go to this Paediatric Palliative Care Unit".
