The Social Services Department has taken stock of two of its most important grants, emergency aid and family financial aid, which benefited 325 and 168 families respectively last year. It was allocated a total of 475,000 euros, according to the Councillor responsible for the Department, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), who explained it this morning.
The emergency and family economic aid are, together with the rental aid, the fundamental economic benefit programmes of the Social Services Area. The emergency aid is designed "to cover extraordinary circumstances that may arise in a family", benefiting 325 families in 2021. According to the Councillor, "they are endowed with a significant amount of money", as it has "gone from 71,000 euros in 2015, to 295,000 euros in 2021".
However, these grants have decreased compared to 2020, when 430,000 euros were earmarked. "This is because families have increased their income due to the good situation. It is a good indicator to value the economic recovery that is being experienced in Mijas, together with the aid from other plans, such as the OREA Plan, which have contributed families to be able to maintain their jobs and, for this reason, there has been this decrease, which is good news". The Councillor explained the reason why there has been a decrease in applications for this aid type".
Family financial aid
He also took stock of the family financial aid, which 168 families received. It is another of the area's tools, together with the Municipal Food Bank and the wallet cards. They are aimed at families with few resources and their objective is to reduce the risk of minors' social exclusion. "It is a programme co-financed by the Andalusian Regional Government and is designed for extreme situations with very low family income levels. In fact, for a family unit of two people, it is considered that they have to be at 71% of the IPREM (Public Indicator of Multiple Effect Income)", Zapico pointed out.
As in the previous programme, in 2020, it was endowed in an extraordinary way, providing almost half a million euros to this programme. Its "very low" scales make, according to the Councillor, "this aid is an indicator of the economic recovery that we have in Mijas, of the creation of employment and the employment increase in families. We have gone from that amount of almost half a million euros to 181,000 euros of aid, which means that many fewer families need this very extreme aid, for families with very low resources, which is good news", stressed the Councillor, who valued the almost five million euros allocated in 2021, to different aid programmes. "This is thanks to the fact that the Mijas Town Council Government, with Josele González at the head, insists that social aid is a priority, as we are seeing with this expenditure of more than five million euros in the last two years. It is a very considerable increase over previous years," concluded Zapico.
