Foreigners Department organises this initiative, which also takes place on Tuesdays at the Pensioners´ Home in Mijas Pueblo, and on Thursdays in Las Lagunas

This week, the Councillor for the Foreigners Department Arancha López (Cs) has visited La Cala Senior Citizens' Centre which, every Wednesday, hosts the language workshop promoted by Mijas Town Hall. These meetings, in which English and Spanish-speaking users participate, promote language learning, as well as encourage cultural and social exchange. "These sessions provide an opportunity to learn about the customs, cultures and history of English-speaking countries and, of course, our own. It is a workshop that has been running for more than 10 years and these meetings have also given rise to true friendships that have lasted over time," said the councillor.

The method used in this language workshop is very practical and simple. All you have to do is go to the Senior Citizens' Centre, have a drink, and talk about the topics that generally come up as you go along. "Occasionally, there are participants who come with the intention of clarifying an expression in the language they are learning, so we help them and generate a conversation around the proposed topic," said Luis García, provisional coordinator of this workshop from La Cala.

These same meetings are also held on Tuesdays at the Mijas Pueblo Pensioners' Home, and on Thursdays at the Las Lagunas Pensioners' Home, all at the same time, from 9:30 to 11 am. But it is this workshop in La Cala which is the most popular, with more than twenty participants. "Many of us are retired people, who come to these classes as a mere hobby, although there are some young people who need to speak English fluently to find a job. They also participate in this workshop," said García, who clarified that "here we don't start from scratch, but it is designed to consolidate the language and the knowledge learned in high school or language school, among others".

Finally, the Councillor for Foreigners took advantage of her visit to the Senior Citizens' Centre in La Cala to encourage users to come to the workshop in Las Lagunas, which has fewer participants. "It is a way of continuing to help all Spanish-speaking people who would like to improve and practice the so-called 'open mind', and get to know better the people who live here and come from different countries," concluded López.
