Attending these language exchange workshops has many advantages. This is much more than a class to learn English, it is also an immersion in the culture, discovering traditions and gastronomy, meeting new people and even opening our circle of friends. According to the councillor for Foreigners, Arancha López (Cs), “here they exchange languages ​​and learn a new one, but it doesn’t stop there. Other cultures are learned, another way of life. Very different people from different parts of the world participate, it is very enriching”. These exchange workshops have been running since 2011 with great participation, organised to bring the foreign group closer together and delve into their customs and culture. They take place at the pensioner’s centre in Mijas Village on Tuesdays, at La Cala on Wednesdays and Las Lagunas on Thursdays, all from 9.30 to 11 in the mornings. Mainly English-Spanish conversation exchange and vice-versa take place. The Foreigners Department encourages both residents and local neighbours to participate in this immersive experience.
Some 300 people participated in these workshops in 2019. Each session is attended by a coordinator who is in charge of promoting the conversations, as well as providing support to new attendees.

Good reception Elena Attías is the coordinator of the Las Lagunas workshop. She assured: “we talk about different things; cinema, culture in other countries or gastronomy and current affairs. We always cover many topics. We lack native English speaking volunteers”. Charo Aguilar has attended the workshops for years and confirmed that “it is great to attend, as it is a very simple way to practice English and Spanish and help other people from different countries”.
