A lunch at El Torreón restaurant in La Cala provided the perfect end to this day of tribute and celebration

The celebrations and recognition for CP Mijas-Las Lagunas following their promotion to Segunda RFEF, including the league title, continued on Monday 11th. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), alongside the first deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), and the second deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), welcomed the players, coaching staff and directors to an official ceremony on Monday morning at the Town Hall. The newly promoted players attended the official reception carrying the cup that crowns them champions of Group 9 of Tercera RFEF, a trophy they wished to present to the mayoress of the city.

Afterwards, the group walked the short distance from the Town Hall to the Hermanos Núñez Andréu viewpoint, where the mayoress presented a pin to each player. Mata took the opportunity to meet them in person and exchange a few words, particularly with local player Cristóbal, the team captain, and, of course, the manager, José García from La Laguna.

Congratulations and encouragement

The mayoress and the councillors from the government team took the opportunity to congratulate and offer encourage them for the new adventure that awaits them as a team now in Segunda RFEF. “This government team is very committed to sport, and now having a team in that category makes us much prouder of the place where we live and the place we represent”, said Mata. “Today I wished them luck with the huge burden of responsibility that comes with being in that division, Segunda RFEF, and I hope they have the same drive and ambition that I have as mayoress: to think big and achieve significant successes that will highlight the fact that Mijas exists and is one of the best places to live and enjoy football".

On Monday, moreover, the club’s flag was also hung on the façade of the Town Hall, marking a major milestone: moving up from Primera Andaluza to Segunda RFEF in five years. This has been achieved thanks to perseverance, determination and, of course, the support of many people. “I couldn’t be happier, because I’m here at our Town Hall, in my home, and, to be honest, everything that’s happening to us is wonderful, both at a sporting and institutional level; it’s incredible”, said the club’s president, José Manuel Quero, who concluded by noting that “we’ve made history here in the municipality; we must be proud of what we’ve achieved, and now all that remains is to finish celebrating and think about next season, which won’t be easy”. It probably won’t be easy, but it’s sure to be exciting. CP Mijas-Las Lagunas will compete next season against historic sides such as Recreativo de Huelva and El Jerez, among others. But that’s not all; with the championship and promotion, they’ve also secured direct entry into the Copa del Rey, where they’ll face teams from the first and second divisions.

Floral offering

If there is one thing this team has not lost throughout the season, it is faith and hope. So much so that, as a token of gratitude, the CP Mijas-Las Lagunas delegation also visited the San Manuel González parish on Monday morning to present a floral arrangement to the Virgen de la Paz, patron saint of Las Lagunas, and to show her their promotion trophy.

The parish priest, Manuel Jiménez, congratulated the group on their spirit of self-improvement, as did the elder brother of the Hermandad de Jesús Vivo, Bosco Rivas. Both praised the commitment of coach José García who, as a promise, has visited the parish almost weekly to ask the Virgin for protection and even miracles in important matches.

Final celebration

To round off a few days packed with celebrations, CP Mijas-Las Lagunas enjoyed a lunch at El Torreón restaurant in La Cala, where players, directors, the coaching staff and collaborators gathered. Mario Gallardo, the restaurant manager and a regular supporter of the club, said, “I’m very happy to have you all here; it’s a pleasure for us to host this closing celebration and, while we’re at it, to be able to touch the cup”, the manager added with a laugh.

Both players and officials were “delighted”: “We’ve achieved our goal of promotion; it’s been a few days of celebration and we’re going to put the icing on the cake with a meal at this restaurant, which has always treated us superbly”, said the team captain, Cristóbal Jiménez.

The club thanked El Torreón restaurant for its “excellent” willingness to collaborate with them. The business also highlighted its commitment to local sport: “Sport is very important to us and we don’t just support CP Mijas-Las Lagunas; we’re open to helping any club in Mijas and are more than delighted to collaborate with them”, concluded Gallardo.
