From the bonds forged during the support provided by Soroptimist International to a group of women whose businesses in Valencia were affected by the DANA in October 2024, the photographic exhibition ‘The Fury Within Me. Desolation’, by photographer Vicenta Casañ, is born. The exhibition is hosted by the socio-cultural association Mujeres Mijitas at its headquarters, and through her photographs, Casañ invites us to reflect on what it means to lose everything in a disaster such as the one experienced.

“She wanted to convey what had happened, and for people to be aware that this can happen at any time and any place. So we worked with her for many months to help her get her business back on its feet. With a little funding, we helped her fulfil her dream of running her business again”, explained the president of Soroptimist International, Aura Roderick. As she recounted, “Vicenta’s business was a yoga centre; when we met her, we found the situation as seen in the photographs on display. Everything was flooded and she had lost all her materials. Together with her, we first began drying out the premises and then helped her with the lost equipment”.
Raising awareness through photography
For her part, the secretary of the organisation, Daphne Theunissen, noted that “what we want is for people to see what Vicenta has achieved. The photographs speak of her situation and what happened around her. The name of the exhibition, ‘The Fury Within Me’, reflects her inner voice, and ‘desolation’ because she would walk into her studio and everything was destroyed”.
To make this possible, they have had the support of Mujeres Mijitas, which has voluntarily made its headquarters available as an exhibition space. Its president, Juana Bueno, stated that “we are proud to have this exhibition here; we are very happy. We always try to give Soroptimist the support it needs at times, so we try to organise those projects and workshops that require it”.
Also present was the councillor for Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), who expressed the Mijas Town Hall’s support for this type of initiative, as “any message that raises awareness in society is important. We greatly appreciate that Mujeres Mijitas have made their premises available and the work carried out by Soroptimist”, he added, noting that “we have seen many images on television and in the media, but ultimately the experiences of a person who shares them and who, through the creativity of photography, is able to transport us all to those moments, truthfully, it has an even greater impact and makes a deeper impression on people’s hearts when they see it”.
The exhibition can be visited until 29th May by prior appointment on 653 77 16 25.
