Visits to the Cortijo Acebedo site are back thanks to ‘Get to know your municipality’

  • A group of students from Las Lagunas Secondary School took part in this activity on Wednesday 15th
  • The Historical Heritage Department is once again collaborating with this programme, which is promoted by the Education Department
  • El proyecto de investigación del yacimiento de Cortijo Acebedo llegará próximamente a su cuarta fase.

The aim of the initiative is to disseminate the great historical value of this area, which was occupied from the Iron Age to the Roman period

This Wednesday, 15th of January, the visits to the Cortijo Acebedo archaeological site included in the programme ‘Conoce tu municipio’ (Get to know your municipality), which is once again promoted by the Department of Education of the Mijas Town Hall with the collaboration of the Department of Historical Heritage, were resumed. The aim of the initiative is to disseminate the great historical value of this space, "whose uniqueness is mainly focused on the continuity of human occupation in the same place throughout antiquity, from the Iron Age to the arrival and settlement of Roman civilization", said the coordinator of the Department of Historical Heritage of Mijas, Desirée Piñero.

A group of students from the 1st year of Baccalaureate at IES Las Lagunas learned about the archaeological work that, since 2017, has been carried out on this estate, firstly with the ground probing work and then with the general excavation and research project, "all so that young people become aware of the archaeological heritage of their municipality and see the importance and the need to protect and conserve it", said Piñero.

The coordinator of the department also explained that the fourth phase of the research project of this site will soon begin, where the study of the thermal space found on the estate and its different uses will continue, which was not only used for bathing, "in fact, the Romans adapted the area for new functions, such as the production of oil or wine".

  • El grupo de jóvenes del IES Las Lagunas que visitó hoy el yacimiento estudia la modalidad de Humanidades.

This group of young people described both the explanation and the tour of the estate as "very interesting". "We are studying this topic in the subject of Historical Heritage", said their teacher, Virginia Capilla, adding "now we are doing a project to get to know our town and we have done some research on this estate, so there is nothing better than coming here to finish this project".

"I think that this type of archaeological sites, which apparently are all along the coast, are quite important to know our roots and where we come from", said the student María del Mar Miranda, while the young Rafael Herrera said that “I knew that this site was located here but not everything that is inside and I really liked it, especially the part of the necropolis and the tombs”.

The visits aimed at students from schools in Mijas will continue in the coming weeks. In addition to this programme, the Historical Heritage department also offers this activity to the rest of the citizens who are interested in visiting the estate. All they have to do is send an email to patrimoniohistorico@mijas.es.
