With the end of the summer it is time to take stock of the cleanliness of the Mijas coastline. During the last few months a total of 15.83 cubic metres of waste, mostly plastic, have been removed from the waters of the municipality. 

This has been reported by the councillor for Beaches and delegate of the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who explained that it is the supra-municipal body responsible for collecting waste from the sea. In this sense, he indicated that the cubic metres of Mijas represent 13.39% of the total that have been removed during this campaign along the entire western coast of the Costa del Sol.

In terms of typology, the collection of plastics stands out, having accumulated 13.70 cubic metres, followed by seaweed with 0.64 cubic metres; wood, 0.59 cubic metres; organic matter, 0.04 cubic metres and 0.87 cubic metres of other materials.

 

"From the waters of Mijas, mainly plastics have been removed, so we should all be aware of how important it is to recycle and not throw waste into the sea. A simple plastic bag can take around 150 years to decompose, causing damage to flora and fauna", said the councillor. 

Furthermore, Gómez Teruel pointed out that the municipality has posidonia meadows on its coastline which are of "incalculable ecological value" and which must be preserved. In fact, the area where it is located is considered a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), an area between Calahonda and the Calaburras lighthouse, which translates into more than 1,400 hectares of posidonia meadows.

Meeting of the beach management body

On the other hand, the beach management body has also met, composed of the Department of Beaches, Environmental technicians, consultants, businessmen, Local Police and lifeguard team. All of them have agreed that the summer season has been very positive, with no significant interventions by the security forces or lifeguards.

It is worth mentioning that last May Mijas renewed the Q for Tourist Quality certification for nine beaches, the ISO 14001 Environmental certification for the entire coastline and the Universal Accessibility certification for four beaches. To all this must be added the four blue flags that fly along its coastline, the Blue Trail distinction for the Coastal Path and a unique Blue Centre on the Costa del Sol. From the consulting entity that evaluates the coastline and the technicians of Environment and Beaches have reported that the beaches of Mijas will undergo an analysis for the granting of a new certification, in this case the S for Tourism Sustainability.

"We work every day to continue making the coast of Mijas a benchmark, not only on the Costa del Sol, but throughout the country", concluded the councillor for Beaches.
