The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), the first deputy mayor and councillor for Infrastructures and Works, José Carlos Martín (Cs), accompanied by the councillors for Contracting and Town Planning, Roy Pérez (PSOE) and Andrés Ruiz (Cs), respectively, have announced that work on the Grand Park of the Costa del Sol will begin at the beginning of May.

The works have been awarded for 22.6 million euros to the companies Vías y Construcciones S.A. and TT and EXC Arroyo and have a completion period of 18 months.

“We are facing what will be the lung of the Costa del Sol in one of the most ambitious projects in our municipality, where 360,000 square metres will house some 20,000 plants and around 2,000 trees and shrubs. We are talking about a green area with a navigable lake and other recreational, cultural and sports facilities such as a skate park, an auditorium, areas for running and much more, in what will be a benchmark park, not only in our municipality, but in the whole province and which will also be one of the most important in Andalusia”.

The mayor added that “this space will undoubtedly be the expansion area for our city, very close to the Cerros del Águila housing development and the road that goes up to the old racecourse, revaluing the whole area as well as adding a new tourist attraction to the municipality”.

For his part, Martín praised “the work carried out by the municipal technicians on a project of such magnitude that has required almost seven years effort and has overcome many setbacks that the Town Hall has had to find solutions for”.

“This is the most ambitious project in Mijas to date and it is in line with the sustainable development programme that we are promoting in the municipality, where in the last eight years we have inaugurated eleven parks. This is a project that covers an area of almost 36 hectares where the residents of Mijas will find nature, sport, culture, leisure and tranquillity, with spaces to provide for all ages and all tastes”, assured the deputy mayor.
