The City of Mijas Awards recognise the contribution of individuals and groups to the municipality

The first edition of the City of Mijas Awards brought together numerous local residents at the Las Lagunas Theatre on the evening of Tuesday 28th of March, from 19:00 hours, eager to recognise the efforts of individuals, entities and groups who work in different areas for the benefit of our town. With this gala, the municipality pays tribute to show that it values the actions that shape it today and keep it in permanent growth and social and economic development.

“Today, more than ever, we should feel proud of what we are today, because Mijas is more than just a town of dreamy pictures, of beautiful contrasts between the sea and the mountains, we are the heart of the Costa del Sol and it is all thanks to the tenacity and effort of each of the people who are part of this family, hard-working, tenacious, fighting, professional people, who never tire of pushing forward even when the direction is uphill. Because the true treasure of a city lies in those who live it and in Mijas we have to say that we could not be luckier, thank you very much and viva mijas”, said the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE).

In total, five City of Mijas awards, two Medals of the Town, one special mention and up to 23 special COVID awards were presented. “We have recognised and paid tribute to many people and groups who in recent years, especially during the pandemic, have been a bastion and have always been there. From the Town Hall we did not want to miss this opportunity to do our bit and, especially, to value the work that was done particularly at that time, others have been awarded for the work they are doing today. I want to thank everyone and congratulate them for the magnificent work they do, have done and will continue to do for society in Mijas and for the ‘Mijeños’ in general, so my congratulations to all”, added the first deputy mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs).

City of Mijas Awards

Firstly, the City of Mijas award went to the Canal Sur programme ‘Andalucía directo’ for its commitment to current affairs, its dedication to keeping alive the traditions of our community, its special treatment in its coverage of the popular festivities in Mijas such as San Antón and the Pastorales Contest, as well as for closely following the current pandemic in the municipality. A recognition that was received, in an exclusive live broadcast for the Andalusian television, by the reporter in Malaga, Jan Carlos Gonzalez.

Afterwards, an award was presented to those responsible for Venta La Butibamba in La Cala, for having established itself as a gastronomic and historical reference point on the Costa del Sol and for continuing to keep alive the tradition of Mediterranean cuisine, close to home, since it opened its doors more than two centuries ago, in 1800. Its milestones are impressive: the restaurant has survived historical events such as the wars of independence and the civil war.

The third and next Ciudad de Mijas Award went to firefighter Pedro Luque for a lifetime’s work rescuing people, the last of his actions being to fly to Turkey after the earthquake that devastated the country to help in the search and rescue of survivors.

The Association of People with Disabilities of Mijas, Adimi, received another City of Mijas award for its trajectory through effort and self-improvement, with a tireless struggle that began in 1999 and has grown to provide services that bring wellbeing and quality of life to its users and their families.

The fifth and last Ciudad de Mijas award went to dancer and teacher Berni Gabriel and her students, recognised for their effort and dedication to dance, which has led them to win numerous national and international awards.

Medals of the ‘Villa de Mijas’

Another of the emotional moments of the gala was when special recognition was given to groups and entities that helped during the pandemic and when the Medal of the Villa de Mijas was also awarded to the Local Red Cross and to the health professionals in Mijas, as well as the Special Mention to Civil Protection for their dedication to citizens, especially during the health crisis of COVID-19.

By no means did the surprises end here. The Mijas Town Hall also presented up to 23 special awards to associations, social entities, private companies or individuals who, in one way or another, also faced the pandemic, stitching solidarity, filling shopping baskets or calming the anxiety when we lacked kisses, hugs or family and friends.

“Of course, receiving recognition from our Town Hall for the Idiliq Foundation is a source of pride. To know that the whole team, all the volunteers who work every day to make the social action of our foundation develop as well as it does and to see that the Town Hall is also able to perceive it, well, for us it is a joy and a source of pride”, said the president of the Idiliq Foundation, Juan Miguel Marcos, one of the recognised entities.
