Saving and rehoming more than 26,000 dogs and cats in twenty years have led King Philippe of Belgium to recognise the work carried out by the President of the ‘Asociación Animal Care España’ Fabianne Paques. This Belgian citizen was one of the fifty people nominated for this year’s ‘Be Heroes’ awards. “From 1999 until today, we have saved more than 26,000 dogs and cats, although I had never been aware of this figure because we live and work. King Philip has heard our story and the work we do. It is a source of pride that he has chosen us,” said Paques.
One of the colleagues she has been working with for more than fifteen years presented the candidature for these awards. They were on 21st July last at the Royal Palace in Brussels during the Annual and Civil Parade on the Belgian National Day. As Fabianne said, “it was a surprise for me. I never thought I would have the honour of being recognised in this way”. She was named a hero in the initiative recognising the vital role of ordinary citizens who become silent heroes by selflessly serving the public in aid work. A task she says she will continue to do, but for which she needs the help of more people: “Everyone is welcome in our association. They can adopt an animal, help us to walk them, bring food, etc. All of this is great for us, but the best thing would be for more adoptions to take place”.
