Last Thursday, August 26th, was the last day of the summer season for the La Cala solidarity stands, where you can buy gifts and souvenirs and at the same time collaborate with the social groups of Mijas. During July and August they have been set up during the afternoons and on week days. In September they will return to their usual times: from 10 to 14 hours on the last Wednesday and Saturday of each month. According to the councillor for Foreigners, Arancha López (Cs), “there is a very good atmosphere in this solidarity market. We had to modify the schedule due to the heat, and as it was set up later, we hoped that people would also have returned from the beach. Here the groups make themselves known and offer solidarity items”, she commented. Last Thursday 8 stands were installed, although there are more groups participating in the initiative. Caritas joined this summer: “It is a very good initiative, since this is how we make ourselves known and tell others about our work. We have recently joined, so we do not sell any articles yet, and only provide information. We offer help to anyone who needs it at our headquarters on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:15 to 12 noon”, stated the director of Cáritas in La Cala, Ana María Verdugo. Associations such as Cudeca, Suspiros de Cuatro Patas, Mijas Felina, Age Concern, Soroptimist International, the Lions Club and Donkey Dreamland, among others, also set up their solidarity tables. All associations present their work, while seeking volunteers and help. “From Donkey Dreamland we encourage everyone to collaborate, the ‘burritos’ are fabulous animals, very affectionate, they just need a little love, food and care. But we have a lot of work, we need volunteers”, highlighted Wietse Haak, a volunteer for this group. In September, the solidarity tables will return to their autumn schedule.
