‘Destination Mijas’ grows by 69 percent in Booking searches

The Government Team believes that this points to the interest that the destination is awakening among potential travellers to Spain

The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), announced on Tuesday morning that the municipality has grown 69 percent in searches for 'Booking' (one of the largest and busiest accommodation and travel websites in the world). “We are facing great news, always from the caution that must prevail due to the health situation and the evolution of vaccination, but these data show that Mijas generates interest among the potential public to visit us. We are the destination that has grown the most in Andalusia in terms of percentage and that is a very good sign to begin the ascent towards stability and greater growth in our tourism industry, which generates so many jobs in the town”, points out González.

Therefore, despite the fact that the national top destinations remain in large cities such as Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Barcelona and Granada, this summer 2021, travelers are looking for other types of locations and activities less oriented to large crowds. Thus, the list includes Mérida (Badajoz), with an increase of 82 percent per year in the number of searches; Adeje (Tenerife), which rises 76 percent; Mogán (Gran Canaria), with an increase of 74 percent; Santillana del Mar (Cantabria), whose searches have risen 70 percent; Mijas, with an increase of 69 percent, and Alcudia (Mallorca), with 60 percent.

“The Spanish this year have decided to rediscover Spain and our destination is one of the most valued. Our offer of safe outdoor tourism is penetrating the market although we must be cautious because it is precisely the fear of the forecast due to the pandemic that causes reservations not to be made more than two weeks before”, says Martín, who has highlighted that "the national tourist is the one who visits Mijas the most and to whom the advertising campaigns launched by the council for these last two such atypical seasons have been directed, mainly".

Initiatives

The Department for Tourism has worked on two fundamental lines to reactivate this sector. On the one hand, the guarantee of safe outdoor tourism with segments such as nature (trails through the mountains, Coastal Path, golf and beach) and, on the other, with the creation of a 'Virtual tour' consisting of a video which shows a guided tour of the city promoting the places of greatest interest. This material is in Spanish, English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Korean, seeking in the medium and long term to recover the international tourist, especially Asian.
