Mijas joins the gatherings in memory of the victims of the train accident

  • On Wednesday 28th, authorities and local residents observed a minute’s silence outside Mijas Town Hall and branch offices
  • Minuto de silencio guardado a las puertas de la Tenencia de Alcaldía de Las Lagunas.

Towns and cities across the country responded to the call issued by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces

On the afternoon of Wednesday 28th, Mijas joined the minute’s silence called by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) as a mark of respect for the victims of the Toledo train accident. Authorities and local residents showed their support for those affected outside Mijas Town Hall and the branch offices in La Cala and Las Lagunas.

The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), led the gathering in Las Lagunas. The mayoress of Mijas conveyed her condolences to the families of the at least 69 people who died in the tragedy, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, who number over a hundred. “There is no comfort for those families who, since the accident happened, have been unable to contact their loved ones, who each boarded that train with their own life goals, whether for work, study or leisure. It is a very sad time”, said Mata, who also called on the central government for “complete transparency” when sharing any details about the crash “because the deceased deserve it, as do their families and everyone who was on those trains”.

The deputy mayor for Las Lagunas, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), called for unity during these difficult times. “We must think of the families of the deceased and the injured. They all need support and help, but we as Spaniards must also need to stand united. That is the only thing we should focus on today”, he noted.

  • Concentración en la entrada del Ayuntamiento de Mijas.

In Mijas Pueblo, where flags at the Town Hall flew at half-mast, PP spokesperson, Mario Bravo, expressed his sorrow at having to address yet another rail accident in the country. “It is a form of transport we have all always trusted and most of us have used at some point, which is why what happened is a true tragedy. Today’s message is, without a doubt, to offer our support and affection to the victims”, he stated.

  • Autoridades y respeto también mostraron su apoyo a las víctimas en La Cala.

In La Cala, local the deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), said his thoughts were very much with everyone suffering the consequences of this accident, while expressing gratitude for “the work of the security forces and the volunteers from these villages in Toledo, who are supporting the efforts of the emergency teams to ensure those affected receive the best possible assistance”.

The Mijas PSOE did not attend the gathering called by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces but, as expressed that morning following the ordinary plenary session, offered its full support to those affected, noting that, as a sign of institutional respect, the party has suspended its public agenda until the end of official mourning.
