It claims that their condition “poses a danger to local residents who use the 17 existing crossings every day”

On Wednesday 7th, Mijas Town Hall, through the Department of Infrastructure and Works, once again called on the Spanish Government to carry out urgent repairs to the pedestrian footbridges over the A-7, “given their lack of maintenance and safety”, according to the councillor responsible for the department, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), and the councillor for Operational Services and Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP). According to the councillors, “the corrosion of the handrails and the concrete anchors poses a clear danger to pedestrians and also to vehicles travelling below, as pieces are breaking off”.

“There are 17 such footbridges within the municipality, and “the council cannot act to repair the damage as ownership lies with the Spanish Government, meaning it risks facing state sanctions”, explained Torres Trella, who added that “requests have already been sent on several occasions to the Ministry of Transport and today [Wednesday 7th] another general request will be issued regarding all existing footbridges”.

Mijas Town Hall reported that “in recent years, no maintenance or upkeep of any kind has been carried out; we are talking about rusty railings, paintwork that has not been touched up and pieces of concrete falling away”, said Gómez Teruel. “Full responsibility for maintenance lies with the Ministry of Transport, which does not hesitate to fine Mijas Town Hall if it attempts to carry out any work; that is why we reiterate the urgent need for them to intervene in view of the deterioration of the bridges, given that Mijas Town Hall is not permitted to do so,” added Torres Trella, who complained that “none of the requests sent has received a reply”.

Gómez Teruel also urged the Spanish Government to undertake this urgent work “to ensure safe access to the beaches within the municipal area”. “Maintenance has been neglected for years and we now fear that a simple repair will no longer suffice; instead, many sections of railings, which are completely corroded, will have to be replaced”, he stated.
