With the second half of September still ahead, Mijas is defying the daily routine with a wide-ranging and varied weekend leisure programme. It is a time for theatre, music, flamenco, neighbourhood gatherings and cuisine that invites you to savour autumn before it arrives.

Friday 18th

Art will play a key role in the town’s cultural agenda. On Friday 18th September, the Casa Museo in Mijas Pueblo will host the opening of the photography exhibition ‘The Colour of Cold’ at 20:00. The exhibition will run until 19th October.

From photography, we move on to painting. The Las Lagunas Cultural Centre will host the opening of a painting exhibition organised by the Camino de Las Cañadas Neighbourhood Association on 18th September at 18:00. The artists showcasing their works in Mijas will be Mari Carmen Pérez Blanco, Catalina García Pérez, Isabel Pacheco Ruiz, Mari Luz Santana Gutiérrez, Encarna Candes Gómez and Antonia Ríos Toledo.

To mark World Alzheimer’s Day, which is celebrated on 21st September each year, AFA Mijas will welcome the writer Alejandro Seral, who will present his new book ‘Morir dos veces’. The event will take place this Friday 18th at the association’s Day Centre at 17:00.

On the musical front, the Granada Youth Symphony Orchestra will delight audiences this Friday with a performance of Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D major and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. The musicians will take to the stage at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas at 20:00, and tickets can be purchased for 10 euros via giglon.com or at the theatre box office from two hours before the performance.

As for food, foodies can head to the 5th Roali Wine Fair. The event will take place this Friday at Avenida Los Perales 2, in Las Lagunas, from 11:00 to 19:00. Saturday 19th

The Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas continues its September programme. Comedy returns to the stage this Saturday with the play ‘Ya me has tocado el cuento’, by Evoca and Teatroz. The performance begins at 20:00 and tickets can be purchased for 18 euros at lacocheraentradas.com or at the box office one hour before the show.

The Young Flamenco Artists’ Circuit, organised by the Provincial Federation of Flamenco Clubs of Málaga, returns to the Peña Flamenca del Sur this Saturday 19th. The cultural event will take place at 21:30 and will feature performances by Malena de Bonela on vocals, Sandra Ortiz and Daniel ‘El Rubio’ on dance, and Juan Belmonte on guitar.

Music will also take centre stage on Saturday, as El Torreón square in La Cala will host the ‘Music under the Stars’ concert. The performance will begin at 19:30 and will be given by the Mijas Band, conducted by Francisco Valcárcel.

Nueva Laguna Neighbourhood Get-Together

Residents of Nueva Laguna will also have leisure plans this Friday 18th. Fernán Caballero Park will host its traditional neighbourhood get-together from 19:30. During the event, this year’s ‘Grandparents’ and ‘Junior Miss and Mister’ will be chosen. There will also be live music, a raffle, a market and a bar serving food and drinks.

The neighbourhood get-together will continue on Saturday 19th, from 12:30, at Fernán Caballero Park with traditional games, a sevillanas competition, a performance by the Punto Danza dance school, a fashion show, music, the crowning of the king and queen, live music with Álvaro Olmedo, a raffle, a market and more food and drink.

Art and photography

This weekend’s leisure programme is rounded off by an attractive cultural lineup, with art and photography offering further reasons to captivate Mijas residents and visitors alike.

The Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office will host an exhibition by Eugenio Patrakov until 30th September, artist Olga Kubar is exhibiting her work at the La Cala Cultural Centre until 5th October, and the exhibition ‘400 Years of History of the Consular Corps in Málaga 1641–2026’ will be open to visitors throughout September on the La Cala boulevard.

Finally, CAC Mijas will host the ‘Miró’ exhibition organised by the Remedios Medina Foundation until 12th November, while the Fotofilia Photography Series: ‘VI Liga Afopriego’ Photography Exhibition can be visited until 30th September at the Nuevo Enfoque Mijas premises in the El Coto residential area (Los Olivos residential complex, phase 1, unit 25).
