Every 28th of June, International LGBTIQ+ Pride Day is commemorated, a day to promote tolerance, equal rights before the law, non-discrimination and the dignity of people from these communities. The Mijas Town Hall does not wish to stand on the sidelines, and has therefore announced that it has prepared “a full programme of activities” to take place over three days.
The programme was presented by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the president of the Andalucía Diversidad Federation, Antonio Ferre, and the president of Orgullo Mijas, Alberto Ortega. “LGBTIQ+ Pride Day has its roots in the struggle of thousands of people who, throughout history, raised their voices to demand rights, equality and recognition. Thanks to that collective effort, we have made great progress, but there is still a long way to go. That is why, the Town Hall reaffirms its commitment to working every day towards a more inclusive, fair and respectful society”, explained Mata.
For his part, Ortega stated that “now is the time” because “although all that fear and those insults still exist, we have strength now. Now is the time because, thanks to our mayoress, who is very active and a true activist, and thanks to Antonio Ferre, who covers the whole of Andalusia, it has been possible to get all this started in Mijas”.

Mural
As for the activities, the mayoress announced that on the 24th and 25th of June, an artist will create a participatory mural open to the public, encouraging expression and raising visibility for diversity. It will take place in the courtyard of the Manuel España Theatre from 11:00 to 19:00.
On the 25th of June, there will also be an information stand called ‘Breaking Labels’. Participants will be able to write messages of support, reflection or protest, which will subsequently be displayed on a collective board. This will also take place in the theatre courtyard.
Manifesto
On the 26th of June, the official ceremony for the reading of the LGBTIQ+ manifesto will be held with Antonio Ferre, president of the Andalucía Diversidad Federation. This event reaffirms the commitment to equality, respect and the defence of people belonging to the community. It will also be read at the Manuel España Theatre. Ferre stated that “Andalusia has often been a pioneer at a national level”, adding that the federation stands out for two milestones: “We began with gender reassignment surgeries that were free under the Social Security scheme for the trans community many years ago, which has served as a benchmark for the rest of the autonomous communities that have gradually implemented it; and, among other things, it has also been a benchmark because Andalusia was one of the first autonomous communities to have its own regional law”.
“I invite all citizens to take part, to enjoy every activity and to join in this message of respect and coexistence. May these days serve to raise visibility, celebrate and continue moving towards a future in which no one has to hide who they are or who they love”, concluded the mayoress.
