The Regional Ministry of Educational Development and Vocational Training, through the Andalusian Public Education Agency (APAE), has already begun work to repair the damage caused by last February’s storms at IES La Cala de Mijas. The regional delegate, Miguel Briones, visited the high school on Thursday morning to learn the details of the intervention, accompanied by the councillor for Education and Infrastructure in Mijas, Juan José Torres Trella (PP); the manager of APAE in Málaga, Kader Miguel Djebbour; and the school’s headteacher, Sergio Sánchez.
The works, carried out by the company Rofez Construcciones, S.L., began last week and, according to the delegation’s press release, will last for a month. The cost amounts to 50,000 euros, an amount included in the ‘Andalucía Actúa’ plan launched by the Regional Government of Andalusia, with a budget of 60.2 million euros to repair educational infrastructure damaged as a result of adverse weather conditions.
Series of storms
Last February, Torres Trella reported, “there was a problem during the series of storms in the sports hall of the high school. At that point, those in charge contacted me to resolve the emergency and avoid any risk from potential falling material. Thus, according to the councillor, “we were in contact with the Mijas Fire Brigade, the delegation was informed, and the necessary steps were taken to prepare a budget and process a minor works contract”.

Specifically, at IES La Cala de Mijas, the storm severely affected the lightweight roof of the sports pavilion. APAE technicians detected significant leaks from the sheet metal roof, which will be the main focus of the work. To this end, the watertightness of the entire roof, which covers an area of 435 square metres, will be examined to repair and waterproof the damaged areas.
According to the councillor, “the work has been underway for about five or six days now and, it is expected that the full repair of the school’s sports facility will be completed in a few weeks”. Torres Trella pointed out that although the sports hall of the school is not under municipal jurisdiction, but rather that of the regional delegation, “from the day it happened we were in contact with them and the Town Hall acted to prevent any dangerous situation.
