The Town Hall awards OLUZ the construction project contract for El Burrito Park

Interaction with free-roaming donkeys and raising awareness of their rights and welfare are the core objectives of this initiative

The Mijas Town Hall has awarded the construction project contract for the El Burrito (donkey) interpretation centre, an initiative aimed at promoting knowledge, protection and preservation of the species, an icon of the municipality. The company OLUZ is responsible for conceiving and designing the space, which will be located on Vial Sur, next to Camino de las Canteras, on a 10,226-square-metre plot.

The contract budget amounts to 39,782.38 euros and the project execution period is 60 days. The document will soon be ready to take the next step: putting the construction works out to tender and developing a recreational park on the site, where the rugged topography will facilitate interaction with the free-roaming donkeys.

The objectives are to raise global awareness of animal rights and welfare, create a donkey observatory, enable walks along shaded, tree-lined paths, and involve the donkeys in forest management.

In addition, donkeys will be able to ‘retire’ in the park, and there will be the option to take in adult animals for recovery and subsequent rehoming. There will also be a Mijas Donkey Interpretation Centre. All of this will be complemented by a network of trails and recreational areas.

Capacity

The project proposes the construction of three large modules for the donkeys, another for veterinary use and a final one for storage. The dimensions of the stables will provide a usable floor area that allows the animals to enter, turn around, move and lie down without difficulty. In total, there are 24 compartments, each with a capacity for two donkeys, resulting in a total capacity of 48 donkeys.

  • El presupuesto de adjudicación asciende a casi 40.000 euros y el plazo de ejecución del proyecto es de 60 días. |

Each compartment must have a water supply for a drinking trough and a light source, as well as wall rings to tether the animals, thereby ensuring that maintenance and cleaning tasks can be carried out safely.

Furthermore, the stables can be situated at either the lower or upper sections of the paths, making use of the natural contours of the land, with semi-underground structures integrated into the landscape and topped with green roofs.

Services

It should be noted that the plot has guaranteed utilities nearby, ranging from a drinking water supply network and an electricity supply network along Camino de las Canteras to a sewage system running parallel to the existing stream.

The backbone of the park is the so-called main path, five metres wide, from which branch the two-metre-wide access paths to the stables. These are designed to allow vehicular access for maintenance and feed delivery.

Areas

The road will be constructed using aggregate base course and will divide the park into two areas: the aforementioned module section on one side, and an area comprising conditioned paths, nature trails, fenced meadows linked to the stables, a riding arena, and a waste management area on the other.
