On Sunday 26th of April, Frank Flebus, a member of Rotary Club Mijas International, led a charity initiative by completing a 200-kilometre cycle ride with a total elevation gain of 983 metres. The route traversed part of the Málaga coast (from Mijas to Nerja and back to Venta La Morena via Cártama station, Churriana, Benalmádena Costa and Fuengirola). The aim of this challenge was to raise funds for AFA Mijas (the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s patients and other Dementias).

 

Members of the public were able to support the cause by making donations at 5 cents per kilometre, with a minimum contribution of 10 euros, contributing to an initiative that combined personal effort and social commitment. In total, 3,450 euros were raised, a figure celebrated upon Flebus’s arrival by several Rotary Club members and representatives from AFA Mijas.

The funds raised will be used to install adapted toilets for the users of the day centre, an essential facility for improving daily care that the group currently cannot afford due to a lack of financial resources.

Independence

AFA Mijas continues to work to promote an active lifestyle that maintains the autonomy of those affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Its work focuses on maintaining satisfactory functional levels, preventing cognitive decline and fostering independence, helping to slow the progression of the disease and improve quality of life.

Workshop

In addition, the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients in Mijas (AFA) has opened registration for a training session on health assets and social prescription. The event will take place on the 25th of May in the Mijas Town Hall plenary hall, starting at 10:00. The guest speaker will be Ainhoa Ruiz Arazola, PhD in Health Sciences and expert in Health Promotion at the Andalusian School of Public Health.
