The Mijas branch of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) presented the first Charity Lunch Against Cancer on Monday 27th, which will take place on Wednesday 7th of May at 14 hours at El Torreón restaurant in La Cala. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied the president of the Mijas AECC branch, Mari Carmen Gómez, at the presentation held at El Torreón restaurant. Both highlighted the importance of such charitable initiatives in boosting cancer research and making social commitment to the cause more visible.

According to Gómez, the event coincides with Fundraising Day, “the annual day when the AECC takes to the streets with the help of volunteers and charity collection tins to raise funds for cancer research, prevention and support for patients and their families”. In this context, the lunch becomes the central event for the Mijas branch.

The price

The lunch will have a maximum capacity of 100 people and will feature a full menu for a donation of 45 euros per person. This includes ‘espetos’ (skewered sardines), salad, Malaga-style fried fish, a variety of paellas such as seafood or oxtail, homemade desserts and drinks. Payment is to be made directly at the restaurant. Payment should be made directly at the restaurant. Those interested in attending can book in advance by contacting the Mijas AECC branch or the establishment itself, subject to availability. A donation-only option is also available for those who are unable to attend but still wish to support the cause. All proceeds will go entirely towards oncological research, a top priority for the association, which aims to reach a 70% cancer survival rate by 2030.

 

Additionally, an auction will be held among attendees for a Real Madrid football shirt signed by the players, donated for the occasion by Real Madrid’s honorary president, José Martínez ‘Pirri’. The shirt will have a starting price, and the proceeds will also be donated to the association.

The group will also set up an information stand on the 1st of May during the ‘sardinada’ celebration in La Cala de Mijas to raise awareness of their cause.

Mata praised the role of the AECC in the municipality and encouraged the public to participate. “Mijas is a municipality that always gives its all for charitable causes, and on this occasion, it will once again demonstrate its commitment to the AECC’s initiatives, which are the expression of humanity in the purest sense of the term.” The mayoress encouraged Mijas residents to take an active part in the Fundraising Day and to attend this event, reiterating the Town Hall’s commitment to the AECC and its activities. “The best way to combat this disease is through research, and that is why the goal of this lunch is so important: to provide science with the resources to advance in cancer prevention. It is a common social challenge in which we must all be involved”, she said.

For her part, Gómez stressed the value of community and business involvement, thanking El Torreón restaurant, the event host and a regular collaborator: “El Torreón and its staff have been showing their commitment to our cause for years, supporting solidarity initiatives, collaborating on charity calendars and providing vouchers for events at the Mijas and Benalmádena branches. Without the continued involvement of committed companies like this, many of our projects would not be possible”.
