The Mijas Town Hall approved on Friday 24th in a plenary session the fast-tracking of investments in the municipality totalling over 33 million euros, which will be used to carry out more than a hundred actions. The projects mainly include road, sports and facilities infrastructure, as well as cleaning and supply services, in addition to the drafting of projects for the refurbishment and pedestrianisation of streets. The installation of underground waste bins throughout the municipality (250,000 euros), the tender for the refurbishment of La Butibamba Park, and the completion of the outstanding sections of the Coastal Path to Fuengirola are among the nearly one hundred initiatives planned.
“This is the scope the government team has to get things done, and these are our priorities”, explained the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), who noted that “some of the projects were initiated by previous administrations and others have been started by us”. “They will possibly be completed in future terms of office, although we are committed to at least tendering and awarding them during this year and, if possible, starting these works as soon as possible,” added Bravo.
Sports facilities
The projects also include the completion of the La Cala swimming pool, for which 1.4 million euros have been allocated, the repair of the roof of the Las Lagunas sports centre (1.1 million euros) and the drafting of the project for the replacement of the turf, warehouse and changing rooms at the adjoining football pitch in Las Lagunas.

Car park plan
The approved budget amendment represents a decisive boost for the municipal car park plan; in addition to the Los Santos car park, which is due to open shortly, highlights include the drafting of the project and the tendering process for the new Mijas Pueblo car park, with a budget of 5.5 million euros. These are joined by the car park at Parque Andalucía (design and tendering, with a budget of 250,000 euros); as well as those in Las Cañadas, La Candelaria, El Juncal and the car park on La Cala Boulevard.
Further projects
Furthermore, the Mijas Town Hall has allocated funding for actions such as the project to dual the Camino de Coín between the Víctimas del Terrorismo roundabout and Camino de Campanales, and the access bridges to the Gran Parque, which receive a budget of 800,000 euros.
In La Cala, the Mijas Town Hall is to undertake several comprehensive refurbishments of various roads, the projects for which will be funded by Friday's budget amendment, including Segovia, Cómpeta, Butiplaya, Júzcar, Cártama, Alemania and Benarrabá streets.

Roadworks will also be carried out in Mijas Pueblo (Juan García Alarcón, Callejón de los Gitanos and Cueva del Agua), where 150,000 euros will be allocated to the project for the refurbishment of the access road to the Puerto chapel and its restoration. In the outlying areas, 500,000 euros are earmarked for repairs to public roads, and progress is also being made on the La Alquería collector and the project for the new road link between the Manzanilla sector and the A-7053 road. A further 350,000 euros are being allocated to works to seal the municipal landfill.
Resurfacing of residential estates
In this budget amendment, the Mijas Town Hall has allocated a total of 2.5 million euros for the resurfacing of public roads; and is promoting the refurbishment of the drinking water supply networks in El Coto (150,000 euros) and Doña Pilar (141,000 euros).
Furthermore, the plans include the refurbishment of the roundabout on the access road to the racecourse (150,000 euros) and the one in Osunillas (700,000 euros). Specifically, as explained by the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), “the budget amendment includes both new projects and multi-year projects, whose financial obligations must be met, and others for which funding is now being completed”.
Vote
The budget amendment was approved with the votes in favour of the local executive, while the PSOE and Ciudadanos voted against it. The opposition, which criticised the fact that the amendment was presented as an urgent matter, questioned some of the planned investments, as well as their viability and future execution. “It’s all smoke and mirrors; what you’re going to see from now on is simply press conferences announcing what they’re going to do, what they’ve budgeted for, that the tendering process has begun, that one thing or another is going out to tender… but the end of the term is just around the corner. We’re waiting to see how many millions they will return at the end of the year”, said the Socialist spokesperson, Roy Pérez.
“Faced with the need to sell a political pitch, as you said, Mr Bravo, you have brought us here with 'alevosía y nocturnidad' (with stealth and under cover of darkness) 33 million euros and 94 projects that you are now going to try to sell to the citizens, saying that you are going to do this, that you have planned… but the reality, the tangible facts, what the citizens are actually going to receive at this stage, is very unlikely", noted José Carlos Martín, spokesperson for Ciudadanos.

The governemnt team emphasised that the objective is to launch these projects as soon as possible. “Most of these actions are already awarded, pending available funds to finance them and formalise the contract”, replied Bravo.
For her part, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), stressed that this amendment completes the initial budget. “It will respond to the needs that Mijas has been demanding and the lack of infrastructure in many areas; in this sense, we will have time to execute them”, stated Mata, who concluded by noting that “we will continue doing things for this municipality, which has been so punished by political instability, which has meant that municipal management has not been able to meet the citizens' needs”.
