To mark World Health Day, the Department of Health at the Mijas Town Hall is organising a family day this coming Sunday, 12th of April, to connect and feel as the slogan of the initiative, ‘Mijas, with your wellbeing’ suggests. he event will take place throughout the morning at the Gran Parque. “We want Sunday to be a global day at the Gran Parque so that everyone who visits understands the issues caused by not leading a healthy lifestyle”, explained the councillor in charge of the department, Marco Cortés (PP), who emphasised that “health is the most important thing we have; we must look after it every day. Therefpre, we must exercise, look after our mental health and have a balanced diet, as this is what will allow us to lead a full and healthy life”.
As the councillor noted, a circuit with different stations will be organised at the park: ‘Stress management: pause and breathe’; ‘Sleep hygiene: the importance of adequate rest’; ‘Social support and seeking help: highlighting the importance of social support networks and asking for help’; ‘Internal dialogue and healthy thinking: how we talk to ourselves influences how we feel’ and ‘Emotional activation and intergenerational experience: group laughter therapy dynamics to promote emotional release and group connection’. In addition, there will be a dedicated children’s area featuring leisure activities and an ‘emotions circuit’.
Everyone who completes the circuit will receive a gift. At the end of the day, there will be a dance and movement session for all ages.
Participation of organisations
The event will run from 10:00 to 14:00 and will feature various groups related to health and wellbeing: AFA Mijas, Mijas Lions Club, Afesol, Fuenmijas, the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), FIDA and Sembrando Sonrisas. “I am grateful for their collaboration because they are the experts on health-related issues have shown great commitment. The Department of Health has established frequent contact with these groups to support them in every way possible”, said Cortés, adding that Cafetería Lorena will also be collaborating by setting up a healthy food stall.

For her part, Sari Jalonen-González, spokesperson for FIDA International, a Finnish Christian organisation operating in over a hundred countries, highlighted that their ‘Fida Help Promotion’ project promotes health, especially among young people, focusing on “preventive work, so that they make good decisions in their lives that they can feel proud of later”. On Sunday, they will host a stand “focused on tobacco, vaping, and shisha” and their harmful effects on health.
Other initiatives
Finally, Cortés noted that this event at the Gran Parque is complemented by other upcoming initiatives and some that have already taken place, such as the talk on the 6th of April at the La Cala de Mijas Town Hall Branch, where nurse Patri Cañamero gave a talk entitled ‘Beyond the symptom. Participate in your health process’, in which she offered a broader and more mindful perspective on healthcare and illness.
