Storm Leonardo is set to hit Spain over the next few days, with the worst expected tonight and tomorrow, Wednesday. Specifically for the 4th of February, Aemet has raised the warning for heavy rain on the Costa del Sol and the Guadalhorce area to orange, with rainfall potentially exceeding 150 litres over the course of the day. A more severe situation is expected in the Serranía de Ronda, where a red warning remains in place for accumulated precipitation exceeding 200 litres in 24 hours. Both alerts will come into effect overnight and continue throughout Wednesday.

In addition to the rain, strong winds are expected across Málaga province, along with coastal phenomena on the shoreline. In Mijas, waves of 3 to 4 metres and westerly gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour are forecast, which is why Aemet has issued orange and yellow warnings, respectively, for these hazards.

Pre-alert status

The Mijas Town Hall's emergency advisory committee activated the Local Territorial Emergency Plan on Monday 2nd, in pre-emergency operational level 0, due to this week's weather warnings. This alert led to the closure of all municipal parks, the Coastal Path and access points to the Gomenaro River. The local executive reminds residents that the ground is already saturated from previous rainfall, and the strong winds may cause falling trees and branches, so the highest caution is advised.
