Mata states that they are "expansive accounts that focus on social spending, infrastructure, investment, improved security and street cleaning"

The extraordinary plenary session held on the morning of Tuesday, 30th of December, approved the budget for the 2026 financial year, which amounts to 149,491,143 euros, the highest figure in the municipality's history, reflecting, according to the mayoress of the town, Ana Mata (PP), ‘the good management being carried out’.” The mayoress, along with the first deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), and the second deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado (Por Mi Pueblo), outlined the items that will be allocated to the different services and areas. ‘This is the third budget of this government team,’ explained Mata, ‘which took office more than two years ago to bring order to a large municipality such as Mijas’.

For the government team, these budget includes the “definitive launch” of the high-resolution health centre with an allocation of 625,000 euros to finance the construction project. In addition, one of the budget’s main features is that Mijas maintains its tax freeze for another year, which, as the mayoress explained, means “there will be no tax increases affecting Mijas families, something we were clear about from the outset”.

The basis of the 2026 budget for Mijas lies in “a greater capacity to generate income thanks to good management, but also to the growing economic activity in Mijas and the increase in population”, said Mata, which is expected to reach 100,000 inhabitants next year.

In this regard, the Economy Department expects and increase in revenue from the Construction, Installations and Works Tax (ICIO, 4.96%), capital gains tax (3.6%), property tax (1.5%) and from the share of revenue from the State and the Community.

The budget was approved with the votes in favour of the government team and against of the opposition. A period for appeals is now open before it finally comes into force following its publication in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP). The mayoress has thus defended "expansive accounts with a strong focus on social spending, infrastructure, investment, improved security and street cleaning, aimed at strengthening the public service provided by Mijas".

Increase in social spending

Thus, the increase in social spending is based on higher aid for families and non-profit organisations; home care services; support for people with functional diversity and housing rentals, social services provision; and the social emergency programme. “The figure allocated in 2026 for these items is 5.1 million euros, above the 4.7 million in 2025”, she clarified.

In terms of infrastructure, the 2026 budget is up 60% compared to 2025, reaching 14.5 million euros. In addition to the aforementioned health centre, it also includes important projects such as "the completion of the Las Lagunas Sports Complex; the completion of the Los Santos underground car park; the expansion and refurbishment of the La Cala football pitch; and the construction of the Osunillas roundabout, which will improve access and road safety for residents in the area", listed the mayoress.

The Mijas Town Hall will also undertake other projects such as the repair of the La Cala sports centre; the roofing of sports areas in schools; the construction of the Coastal Path (La Cala-Fuengirola section); the renovation of the water supply in El Coto and Doña Pilar; and improvement works on the Camino de Campanales.

Other actions included in next year's budget are the comprehensive refurbishment of Juan García Alarcón Street, Callejón de los Gitanos and Cueva del Agua Street; repair work on the roof of the swimming pool at the Las Lagunas Sports Complex; paving of public roads throughout the municipality; and investments in computer software and hardware to continue modernising municipal services. "We are committed to ensuring that the administration provides a faster and better service to all citizens, allowing them to carry out any administrative procedure from home without having to travel. That is why we are working hard to make this available as soon as possible and in the best possible way”, promised Mata.

Sale of municipal plots

Part of the investments included in the 2026 budget will be financed by the sale of two municipally owned plots: La Manzanilla and Cortijo Colorado. This is a new measure compared to previous years and allows the use of available resources without increasing the tax burden on residents.

These two disposals, which will generate 6,141,716 euros in resources, give the budget an initial surplus of 1,383,979 euros. The Town Hall will finance some of the investments included in the budget using the income derived from the sale of these plots of land.

Notable in this section are measures related to the operation of the Local Police, computer applications and software, public road paving, investments in energy efficiency and electrical installations, which increase by 33%, and improvement works in retirement centres, among others.

Public safety

For his part, Cuevas Dawson positively valued the 3.2 million euros allocation for the Local Police, significantly higher than the 505,000 euros allocated in 2025, a difference driven by the acquisition of video surveillance cameras to control traffic, crowds and emergencies.

The first deputy mayor stressed that the amount allocated to the Fire Brigade and Civil Protection has also been increased “significantly”, “demonstrating a commitment to providing more resources and better equipment for those who work to ensure the safety of our residents”. For the Fire Brigade, the budget goes from 100,000 euros in 2025 to 288,000 euros planned for 2026; and for Civil Protection, from 32,000 euros this year to 96,188 euros in the budget.

Regarding tourism, the councillor emphasised that the budgets are designed "to promote and raise the profile of Mijas in the best possible way, with a professional strategy that boosts the local economy and employment".

Street Cleaning

Thus, in Street Cleaning, the budget has been increased and an important step is being taken with the outsourcing of the cleaning of public buildings, adding more human and material resources. In addition, the acquisition of new equipment through co-financed subsidies is being considered. For Cuevas Dawson, "cleaning is something that, both for tourism and for our residents, also needs improvement, and I believe that with these latest budgetary measures, we will see results soon".

This department has a total of 5,495,112 euros allocated for 2026, up from 4,802,657 euros in the current financial year. The budget includes  6,938,884 euros for waste collection and treatment of (compared with 5,611,000 euros in 2025) and a slight increase for the waste treatment plant, up to 4,713,286 euros.

"The budget approved today clearly reinforces the areas that guarantee safety, public services and quality of life for the residents of Mijas. It is a useful, realistic budget designed for the municipality as a whole", he concluded.

Culture, Employment Promotion and Commerce

The Culture Department has an allocation of 700,000 euros for grants to promote cultural activities, heritage dissemination and the conservation of the Manuel España Theatre. For Maldonado, “the boost we want to give to flamenco is also important. We are one of the municipalities with the highest number of flamenco ‘peñas’, and it is essential to work hand in hand with them in order to position Mijas as a benchmark in this field, as it is also Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity".

Regarding  Economic Development and Commerce, the councillor announced the continuation of public-private collaboration through the municipal programmes Nexo and Puente al Comercio, which will promote “a new way of engaging with local businessess and will facilitate access to employment also relying on the university or business associations", explained Maldonado.

Sports

Similarly, the Mijas Town Hall will increase its support for sports organisations and clubs, for which it has set aside a subsidy allocation of 800,000 euros. This is in addition to the 4,417,404 euros allocated by the Sports Department in its budget, which "demonstrates the government team's commitment to a discipline that consistently puts Mijas on the national map", added the mayoress.

Beaches

The Beaches Department's budget includes the cost of the new contract for the surveillance of the Mijas coastline, which has five Blue Flags and certifications for environmental sustainability and universal accessibility. Its main features include around 90 staff, drones, a buggy, and a general public address system for emergencies.

Parks and Gardens

Similarly, the Parks and Gardens Department will be able to increase its investments and spending in 2026 thanks to a budget allocation of 6,370,000 euros, un from 5,830,741 euros in the current budget. The size of the municipality and the number of green areas spread throughout it justify this increase in funding for such an important area.

Education

Furthermore, the Town Hall continues its maintenance work on the municipality’s schools, with 1,880,000 euro allocated within the Education budget. This also includes subsidies for non-profit associations in the education sector.

Acknowledgements

The councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), thanked all the organisations and individuals who, he said, made the drafting and approval of these budgets possible. He acknowledged the work of the Municipal Secretariat, the Municipal Comptroller's Office, the Legal Advisory Service, the Contracting Department, the Human Resources Department and Mijas Comunicación.

"Thank you", he continued, "to all those who have contributed through their work to the success of our town, which is now approaching 100,000 inhabitants. And finally, thank you to all the residents of Mijas, who, by complying with the regulations, paying their taxes and choosing our municipality as their place of residence, have made Mijas an exceptional destination, a place that attracts everyone, not only because of our festivals, our solidarity and support for sport, but also because of the quality of life here".

For the mayoress of the city, "looking to the future with optimism is our goal. Mijas deserves to be managed as a large municipality, and these budgets are proof that we are working to give our citizens the best", Mata concluded.
