The Mijas Town Hall has put the works out to tender to definitively improve access and road safety in Osunillas, on the A-368 road–which connects Mijas Pueblo with Benalmádena– for a total of 1.68 million euros. This project, long demanded by local residents, will receive bids from specialised companies until the 7th of January.
Specifically, as explained by the councillor for Infrastructure, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), the works will consist of the construction of a 50-metre diameter roundabout that will regulate and channel traffic towards the residential areas and the quarry road, thereby improving vehicle flow –especially for heavy vehicles– and eliminating crossings on the current narrow road. According to the councillor, “it is a very important roundabout because it solves a safety issue with a very sharp bend and connects Puerto Málaga Street directly to the motorway”.
To finance this project, which will take six months to complete once the contract has been awarded, the Mijas Town Hall will use a grant of one million euros awarded for this purpose by the Malaga Provincial Council. The remainder of the cost will be financed from its own funds.

Torres Trella stressed that the aim of the project is to provide the road with the necessary accessibility and safety standards for a connection of this type, as “in addition to linking the centre of Mijas Pueblo with a populated area that is clearly growing –thanks also to the existing facilities–, it connects directly with the Costa del Sol motorway in the El Higuerón area”.
The Executive emphasised that this project “is of obvious public interest for Mijas in terms of improving access for residents and neighbours, but also in economic and social terms, as it will help boost tourist activity in Mijas Pueblo and facilitate the transit of commercial vehicles”.
Elimination of dangerous bend
The works will result in a platform consisting of a two-lane carriageway, each lane four metres wide; an inner hard shoulder one metre wide; an outer pavement two metres wide; and a central island with a radius of 16 metres. In addition, the sharp bend on the current road will be eliminated, thereby improving the existing road layout. Currently, the small radius of the bend forces large vehicles to encroach on the opposite lane to negotiate it. Added to this is the fact that there is a road, the La Ermitica, which joins exactly at the bend, creating additional danger, and which also features a change in gradient.
Access to the roundabout
The project includes the construction of an access road to the roundabout from Calle Puerto Málaga, consisting of a single straight alignment with a total length of approximately fourteen metres; and another branch from Camino del Repetidor, which involves replacing the existing road to the booster and the quarries located to the north of the roundabout, with a planned length of approximately 120 metres.
In addition, surface drainage in the area will be improved through works on the Las Presas stream bed, and accessible pedestrian routes will be created, which do not currently exist. The roadside ditches on the cut side are planned to be one metre wide and 30 centimetres deep.
