After a countdown that created great excitement, the artistic lighting illuminating Christmas in Las Lagunas this year was switched on. The official ceremony took place on Friday 5th in the afternoon for the first time on Avenida de Mijas. The mayoress of the city, Ana Mata (PP), was in charge of pressing the button accompanied by a group of children. “I wish you all a Merry Christmas, may you spend it in the company of family and friends, may you have moments to enjoy. Time passes very quickly and sometimes we don’t spend enough time with the people we love most”, said the mayoress in her speech to those present.
This was the first time that Avenida de Mijas had hosted this event, and it was closed to traffic while the programme of activities planned for the lighting ceremony took place, which included music and dancing, as had already happened in Mijas Pueblo on Wednesday 3rd and in La Cala on Thursday 4th. “The aim is for each district of Mijas to have its own special lighting and play a leading role”, explained Mata.

Tradition and magic
In the afternoon, there was a downpour in the Las Lagunas district, but the rain did not spoil the planned programme. The flamenco dance groups from the Las Lagunas UP, directed by Berni Gabriel, opened the show, filling the stage with their artistry and charm. The young dancers, aged between 11 and 16, performed two Christmas carols, an ‘alboreá’ and some ‘alegrías’.
Once again, the singer Mami Curl performed for the occasion, signing Christmas songs and timeless classics. In addition, five pastoral groups performed, adding a traditional touch to the evening. The pastoral groups Las Lagunas, Santiago, Virgen de la Paz, Vecinos del Camorro and La Rosa took to the stage.

“The Town Hall has put a lot of love into lighting up Christmas in Mijas and ensuring that there is a special display at every point, also keeping the shopkeepers in mind”, added the mayoress. “And today we have done something very special, we have closed off Mijas Avenue, which has always been a very busy avenue frequented by many residents of the nerve centre of Mijas, and we wanted to inaugurate it in a very special way. We have had performances, girls dancing, pastoral groups, everything to enjoy our Mijas at Christmas too”, added the mayoress.

Christmas atmosphere
Residents and visitors crowded the street, all looking up at the sky to watch the show, including both the fireworks and the Christmas lights. Avenida de Mijas is illuminated by spectacular LED light arches, as well as a large Christmas tree in the roundabout at Camino El Albero. “We thought the lights were wonderful, we didn’t expect them to be like this and it’s the first time that this part of Las Lagunas has been lit up so beautifully”, said Antonio Tienda and Milagros Valenzuela, a couple who live in the area.
