The 12-kilometre coastline of the municipality of Mijas has renewed its certifications for quality, sustainability, blue flags, Blue Trail, Blue Centre (the only one in the province of Malaga, the La Cala Watchtowers) and universal accessibility at the end of the 2025 campaign and ahead of the start of 2026.
In addition, the renewal of ISO 14001 (environmental certification) is scheduled for mid-month, as it is the only audit currently in progress. The checks to renew these distinctions (external audits) are carried out by Aenor and the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac), a non-profit organisation recognised by the Spanish Government through the Ministry for Ecological Transition.

The councillor responsible for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), praised in a press release the work carried out during the 2025 campaign, which has led to the renewal of certifications “that guarantee an optimal service to users of coastal facilities in terms of comfort, usability, safety, access and environmental care”.
Certifications
The universal accessibility certification according to the UNE 170001-2 standard has been renewed at four beaches: La Cala, El Bombo, Riviera and La Luna-Royal Beach. In addition to the four already existing (La Cala, El Bombo, El Chaparral and La Luna-Royal Beach), a fifth blue flag was added this season at Riviera.
The nine 'Q' for Tourist Quality are at the beaches of La Luna-Royal Beach, Alhamar, Calahonda, Riviera, El Bombo, La Cala, La Dorada, El Chaparral and El Charcón. These same beaches also hold the ‘S’ for Sustainable Tourism. The Blue Centre for La Cala Watchtowers and the Blue Trail for the Coastal Path.
The Watchtowers are an interpretation centre on the Mijas coastline, a cultural and tourist point of interest comprising three exhibition spaces that preserve and explain the history and ethnography of the municipality’s coast.

“Mijas has the best coastline on the Costa del Sol, as demonstrated by the renewal of all these certifications of quality, accessibility and environmental sustainability that we achieved at the end of the 2025 campaign and looking ahead to the start of 2026”, said the councillor.
The ISO 14001 environmental sustainability certification is due for renewal, with the audit currently underway. This standard recognises the optimisation of resource and waste management, the reduction of negative environmental impacts derived from its activity, and the minimisation of risks associated with accidental situations.
Quality and safety 365 days a year
The councillor for Beaches also stated that the government team "works 365 days a year to ensure that the beaches are in perfect condition. Beyond the high season, on days like today, many tourists who come, for example, to play golf, can also enjoy a day at the beach", explained Gómez Teruel.
"In terms of lifeguarding, we are a pioneering municipality, as we have a year-round service. From November to Easter, although the number of lifeguards is reduced, every weekend and public holiday there are two people on bicycles equipped with a defibrillator and first aid kit, ensuring the safety of the path", added the councillor for Beaches, who concluded by pointing out that "we are also very proud to have secured the lifeguard contract, which will guarantee the services of Socorrismo Málaga, one of the best companies in the country, until 2029".
