Last Friday, 17th, the Mijas Contemporary Art Centre (CAC Mijas) hosted the inauguration of an exhibition of paintings by Danish artist Kurt Ard, who will turn 100 in December. He has spent more than half his life living in Spain, specifically in Andalusia, which his son, Peter Ard, described as "a paradise, one of the best places to be". The exhibition, which can be visited at the museum on Calle Málaga until the 12th of February, consists of 19 works painted in acrylic on cardboard or wood. Eighteen of the pieces depict typical Andalusian scenes from 40 years ago, while one is inspired by Denmark, the artist's country of origin. "In his work, you can see what life was like back then, how people worked, what the festivals and fairs were like... There are also motifs from nature, showing what Andalusia was like in those days, which was very beautiful", explained Peter Ard during the inauguration.
On the afternoon of the 17th, numerous visitors travelled to the CAC Mijas to view the artist's work, which stands out for its realism and attention to detail, sometimes making the paintings almost indistinguishable from photographs. The centre’s management first became interested in Kurt Ard’s work after visiting Peter Ard’s museum. “It caught our attention and we thought it could be a theme that would give people a sense of nostalgia while allowing them to enjoy the enormous quality of the works”, explained the director of the CAC Mijas, Francisco Javier Fructuoso.
Looking ahead to next year, the museum is already preparing new projects. The plan is to host a long-term exhibition focusing on 19th-century classical painting from Malaga, featuring works by painters such as Muñoz Degrain, Moreno Carbonero and Denis Belgrano.
